Buying jadeite can be done with just one sentence. Is it really that simple?

How do you judge the value of jade when buying it? I think it is nothing more than the five aspects of "quality, water, color, workmanship and flaws". Some people say that buying jade can be solved with just one sentence, which is "quality, water, color, workmanship and flaws, and the overall impression is based on feeling". Is it really that easy?

It is undeniable that to appreciate and identify jade, and even to judge its value, one can start from the five aspects of "type, water, color, workmanship and flaws", where type refers to texture, water refers to transparency, color refers to color, workmanship refers to craftsmanship, and flaws refer to blemishes.

Specifically, the type and water are complementary to each other. If the crystal particles are fine and the structure is tight, it means that the type of jade is good, the jade is delicate, and the texture is warm. Similarly, such jade has better transparency and better water.

Jade has rich colors, and there are four standards for judging the quality of jade's colors: "rich, bright, positive, and uniform". These four standards are very important.

Jade bracelets, pendants, ring faces, ornaments and other jade works have different judging standards for jade craftsmanship. For example, jade bracelets must be regular in shape and coordinated in proportion, while pendants require a certain thickness, and ornaments need to focus on details. But in general, jade works should pay attention to coordinated proportions, moderate thickness, and harmonious shapes.

Common jade defects include cracks, cotton, variegated colors, and dirty colors. Cracks will affect the stability and value of jade. Too much cotton will affect the transparency and color of jade. Too many variegated colors and dirty colors will affect the beauty of jade, and jade carvers cannot remove them through carving. Some flaws are inevitable in jade formed in nature, but that does not mean that jade with flaws is bad. It depends on how big an impact the flaws have on the value of the jade.

If we score according to these five standards one by one, theoretically each standard should get full marks or at least get a high score in each aspect to be considered a top-level jadeite.

But in fact, "quality, water, color, workmanship and flaws" is a comprehensive evaluation system. When the craftsmanship is good and there are few flaws, the advantages of quality, water and color will obviously enhance the value of jade. Hence the second half of the sentence: “The overall impression is based on feeling.”

Usually people's first impression is very important, and the same is true when looking at jadeite. This is what people often call "appealing to the eye". The quality, color, and flaws are a detailed breakdown of the overall impression. If you must separate them and treat them differently, you will fall into the dilemma of "being blinded by one leaf" and being overly demanding in details and ignoring the overall picture.

Moreover, it is not so easy to form a comprehensive impression based on feeling. It requires rich knowledge and experience accumulation, and a certain knowledge and understanding of all aspects of jade. It is not just the first glance that means the quality of jade is good.
