Using these three methods, you can identify the authenticity of jade yourself!

I have talked about many methods of identifying natural jade before. Of course, the most direct way is to ask the merchant for a natural jade identification certificate. At the same time, Jadeite Master also said that the appraisal certificate may also be fake. In this case, it is extremely important to learn to use the three methods of identifying natural jadeite that Jadeite Master will talk about today. In other words, you can identify natural jadeite by yourself with the following three methods!

1. Look at the luster with naked eyes

Luster is the degree to which a gemstone's surface reflects light. Different gemstones have different luster due to different optical density and degree of surface polish.

The luster of a transparent gemstone mainly refers to the intensity of reflected light from the surface of the gemstone. The intensity of the luster is determined by the internal composition and structure of the mineral, and is closely related to the degree of polishing, cutting shape and angle of the gemstone surface. Of course, different types of gemstones have different luster.

Main lustre types: Lustre can be graded according to the reflective power of the mineral, and can also be graphically classified using certain material ratios.

Luster helps identify jadeite. The measurement of gloss is often done by observing with the naked eye and relies on subjective feeling. In fact, an experienced person can make a preliminary distinction between jadeite, nephrite and serpentine jade based on the different luster by rotating the gemstone under light and observing the intensity of the light reflected. Because jadeite mainly has a glassy luster, while nephrite has an oily luster, and jade-like minerals such as serpentine have a waxy luster.

2. Look at the color with the naked eye

When we talk about the color of jade, we need to talk about the depth of color, brightness and darkness, and uniformity or unevenness. Jade has a variety of colors, and several colors can coexist in a piece of jade. Overall, the green is unevenly distributed, appearing in the form of dots, veins, strips, and spots on the white, while nephrite, South Sea jade, and serpentine jade are all relatively uniform in color. Among green tones, jadeite has the greatest variation in green, ranging from light to deep, bright to dark; and only jadeite has a bright green color, while other jade-like minerals do not have a bright green color unless they are artificially dyed.

3. Zoom in and observe the structure

Structure refers to the way in which the sizes and shapes of the particles that make up a polycrystalline gemstone are combined. Jade has a special structure, different from other jade-like minerals. Analysis of jade structure is the main method of identifying jade.

As mentioned above, jade is an aggregate of countless tiny crystals. The grains of these crystals are coarse and fine. The coarse ones are easy to see with the naked eye, while the fine ones can only be seen with a magnifying glass.

It is important to understand the crystal shapes that make up jade. Understanding the shape of the jadeite crystals that make up jade is very helpful in identifying jade. On the unwaxed surface of jade, especially the unpolished surface of jade, it is best to use an electric tube to shine from above (that is, under reflected light) to most easily see the jade's large and small flaky flashes. This kind of snowflake-like reflection is called "jade nature." The shape and size of the reflection are directly related to the shape and size of the jadeite grains. This jadeite property is easier to observe on unpolished raw materials and is the main feature for identifying the raw materials.

Jadeite texture is the characteristic of jadeite, which is often the feature that distinguishes jadeite from other jade-like minerals that are easily confused in appearance. For example, nephrite jade (Hetian jade) has an extremely fine felt-like structure, which is difficult to identify even if magnified dozens of times. The color of Henan Dushan jade is similar to that of jadeite, but the jadeite quality is not visible. However, the jadeite quality can be seen under a magnifying glass.

The "jade quality" of jade is due to the fact that the crystal surface of jade is rectangular or square and jade has two sets of cleavage. Therefore, the cross-section and cleavage of jade crystal can be seen under reflected light; under reflected light, it is rectangular or square, like the wings of a fly. This is a characteristic possessed by all jade. Many experts can identify the raw materials with a flashlight, by utilizing this jade quality.

Even after polishing, special patterns can be seen under transmitted light. That is, the crystals that make up the jadeite have the boundaries between each other. The way the jadeite particles are combined is quite special, and it has a mosaic structure. Structural observation is very important for the identification of raw materials and large sculptures. The authenticity of jade can be determined based on its structure.

Of course, in comparison, the third method is more professional and has also raised the threshold for identifying natural jadeite. However, the third method is also the most scientific, and the conclusions drawn are more credible. If you have used the above three methods and still cannot determine whether the jade in your hand is natural jade, it is best to take it to a local professional jade appraisal agency for appraisal.
