What are the carving techniques for jade handles?

The carving of jade handles is an important factor in measuring the quality of jade handles. Jade handles with good carving have high collection value. If a good quality jade handle has poor carving, then it will lose its collection value. This shows how important the carving craftsmanship of a jade handle is. So what are the carving techniques for jade handles?

Jade carving integrates the expressive techniques of traditional Chinese stone carving, painting, calligraphy and other arts, and pays attention to the vivid, natural and smooth composition. Therefore, jade works have a romantic color and express the high-spirited and confident spirit unique to the era. The carving of jade handles naturally incorporates these points. So what are the specific carving techniques?

1. Yin-yang carving (yang carving)

Also known as "relief", it takes the outline of calligraphy and painting as the basis, and carves away the parts outside the outline of the characters and paintings to create a protruding feeling. This carving technique makes the work look like it is inlaid on the surface of the bamboo slips, presenting a three-dimensional visual effect. The product below is a positive carving handicraft, and you can see the protruding three-dimensional effect.

Both intaglio and relief are two basic methods of traditional Chinese engraving. However, today's modern engraving, whether it is intaglio or relief, is obviously fundamentally different from traditional engraving. Modern engraving's treatment of the intaglio lines and the relief bottom texture all demonstrate the language communication between knives. Using knives as pens, the traces of each knife and the texture of the wood structure are clearly reflected in the work.

2. Yin carving

Just the opposite of relief, negative carving is a type of carving, also known as sunken carving. It is a carving technique in which the surface of the carving material is carved into a depression, so that the text or pattern is recessed under the hook edge and lower than the plane of the material. It relies on skilled and accurate techniques to make the lines have starting and ending points, pauses, and depth.

3. Relief

Relief refers to carving a raised shape on a flat surface. It is a carving technique that expresses three-dimensional layers on a flat surface. It is the product of the combination of sculpture and painting. It uses compression to deal with objects and relies on factors such as perspective to express three-dimensional space. It can only be viewed from one or two sides. Depending on the degree of surface protrusion, it is divided into "high relief" and "shallow relief".

Three-dimensional sculpture developed from deep relief. Generally speaking, jade reliefs are carved on flat or curved jade raw stones, while three-dimensional carvings are suitable for jade raw stones of any shape. In other words, three-dimensional carvings are more applicable than reliefs.

4. Round Sculpture

A round sculpture, also known as a three-dimensional sculpture, refers to a non-compressed three-dimensional sculpture that can be appreciated from multiple directions and angles. Sculpture in the round is an overall expression of art on a sculpture, and viewers can see all sides of the object from different angles. It requires the sculptor to carve from all directions: front, back, left, right, top, middle and bottom. The techniques and forms of round sculpture are also diverse, including realistic, decorative, concrete, abstract, etc.

5. Openwork

Openwork can be said to be based on relief, with the background hollowed out after carving. There are generally two types:

First, on the basis of the relief, the background part is generally hollowed out. Some are single-sided carvings, while others are double-sided carvings. Those with borders are generally called "hollow flower panels".

The second is a form of sculpture between round sculpture and relief, also known as concave sculpture, hollow sculpture, or relief. Hollow kernel carving is also a kind of openwork carving.

6. Thread Sculpting

Line carving is also called Yin-Yang carving, which means carving out patterns in the form of lines. Yang carving refers to raised ridges, while Yin carving is the opposite, referring to groove-like lines.

When carving, for positive carving, the highest point of the ridge must be flush with the surface of the jadeite, while for negative carving, it must be lower than the surface of the jadeite.

7. Colorful and ingenious carving

The so-called clever use of color means taking advantage of the shape and situation and using color to apply art. The "shape" and "trend" here refer to both the three-dimensional shape and trend of the jade material, as well as the geometric shape and trend of the skin color; the color here includes the color of the jade material itself and the color of the skin on it.

The most significant feature of colorful jade carvings is that they not only preserve the rich colors of the raw materials, but also use the different colors to more clearly display the theme they want to express, making it the highlight of the entire jade carving.

"Skillful carving" means making clever use of the color of the jade material itself, while "color matching" means designing the work according to the different colors of a piece of raw material. On the basis of skillful carving, the bright colors are brought out, so that the different colors of the raw materials are used just right and very cleverly, and the natural color spots play the role of turning stone into gold in the carvings. "Qiao Se" is a unique skill of Chinese jade carving and has now become a special term in the jade carving industry.
