How to play with jade if you don’t know whether it’s real or fake

As the saying goes, "Every industry has its own barriers." Especially for the "deep" jade industry, it is impossible for a layman to fully understand jade without more than ten years of practical experience. Therefore, quickly mastering the knowledge of jade identification has become a top priority for many jade players. After all, only by understanding jade identification can one better collect and play with jade. So today we will talk about some tips on identifying the authenticity of jadeite.

Tips for identifying the authenticity of jadeite

1. Look at the color

The color of natural jade is gorgeous but not gaudy, clear and bright, with varying shades of deep and shallow, and endless variations. Just as some people describe, the color of natural jade is "alive". If you observe natural jade carefully, you can even see the direction of its color growth: vertical ones are upright, horizontal ones are lying, and some are slanted. But fake jadeite is mostly gaudy, dull, and evenly distributed in color, looking scattered and without any growth direction.

As the price of jade remains high, the price of jade in China continues to rise. Driven by profit, there are many phenomena of passing off fake products as real ones and selling inferior products as good ones in the jade market. Some consumers who have no knowledge of jade are often deceived. In addition to asking authoritative testing agencies to conduct appraisals, it is very necessary for jade lovers to strengthen their own appraisal capabilities. As far as jade is concerned, the biggest problem at present is how to distinguish natural jade from artificial jade? (The picture below is natural jadeite)

What are natural jade and artificial jade? The industry generally divides real jade into A-grade, B-grade and C-grade. The so-called A-grade jade refers to natural jade, while B-grade and C-grade jade are both artificially processed jade. B-grade jade refers to jade that has been bleached and then filled with epoxy resin or dipped in wax, while C-grade jade refers to jade that has been artificially colored. It should be noted here that B-grade and C-grade jade are also jade, but their value is not as great as A-grade. Currently, the domestic jade market is in a stage of steady development, and the quality varies greatly. Except for some big brands in the market, it is difficult to buy high-quality A-grade jade with collection value in other places.

How to distinguish natural jadeite from artificial jadeite? We can roughly distinguish natural jade from artificial jade from the following four aspects.

First of all, in terms of gloss, natural jade has a glass-like luster, while artificially treated jade has a candle-like luster overall or in part.

Secondly, when the artificially treated jade is acid-washed and observed under transmitted light, its crystal structure is loose, and the mineral particles change from columnar to irregular or round, and some even turn into powder. Third, artificially treated jadeite can be seen with stripes of patterns under reflected light.

In addition, jade filled with epoxy resin will fluoresce under ultraviolet light, while natural jade does not fluoresce under ultraviolet light.

These methods of identifying natural jade and artificial jade are not necessarily applicable to all jade, and should be used flexibly during the identification process. When purchasing jadeite, asking the seller to issue a formal invoice and appraisal certificate is also one of the ways we can avoid being cheated.

Maintenance of Jade

1. Avoid collision

Jade is very hard, but it easily cracks after a collision. Sometimes, although the cracks cannot be seen with the naked eye, the molecular structure within the surface of the jade has been destroyed, and hidden cracks appear, which greatly damages its perfection and economic value.

2. Avoid dust

Avoid dust as much as possible. If there is dust on jade, it is advisable to clean it with a soft brush; if there is dirt or oil stains,

If it is attached to the surface of jade, it should be scrubbed with warm soapy water and then rinsed with clean water. Do not use chemical degreasing agents or degreasing liquids.

3. Proper placement

It is best to place it in a jewelry bag or jewelry box to avoid scratches or damage. If it is high-end jade jewelry, do not place it on the counter to avoid dust accumulation and affect the transparency.

4. Contact

Try to avoid contact with perfume, chemicals, soap and human sweat. If jade comes into contact with too much sweat and is not wiped clean immediately after wearing, it will be corroded, causing damage to the outer layer and affecting its original brightness. Especially "glass-ground" jadeite and mutton-fat white jade, which are more sensitive to sweat and oil.

5. Avoid sunlight

Jade articles should be kept away from direct sunlight, because jade expands when exposed to heat, increasing its volume and affecting its quality. Jade, crystal, agate, etc. may even explode when exposed to high heat.

6. Wipe

Accessories should be wiped with a clean, soft white cloth. Do not use dyed cloth or hard fiber cloth to wipe them. Jade jewelry inlaid with gemstones such as diamonds, rubies, sapphires, and emeralds should also be wiped with a clean white cloth to remove grease, dust, etc. This will help maintain and preserve its original quality.

7. Humidity

Maintain appropriate humidity. The quality of jade needs to be maintained at a certain level of humidity, especially jade articles such as water-filled agate and crystal. The surrounding environment cannot be too dry.
