Why does violet jade fade when exposed to light?

Purple jade will turn whitish or even white under strong light or outdoors, commonly known as "death in the light". When shown to others, it does not show the effect of the real object, but it is very rich and bright indoors. Why is this?

First of all, from a physical point of view, we all know that traffic lights display red, yellow and green because their visible light wavelengths are longer and react quickly with photosensitive pigments when entering the retina of the eye, while purple has a very short wavelength.

Of course, this is one aspect. The most important thing is that the quality of violet jade is generally not very good. The base has relatively more cotton threads and lower transparency. Therefore, in brighter light, the reflection of the white base will be more obvious than the purple, making the violet jade appear white, especially the pink and purple jade. Because the color is lighter, the degree of reflection is higher, and the whiteness is more severe.

But blue-purple and imperial purple are quite special. Generally speaking, their colors are brighter under natural light than indoors. At this time, "death in light" does not mean death in natural light, but death in light.

To avoid being misled by colors under different light sources. When looking at violet jadeite, don’t look at the color directly. Instead, look at the base first. See what proportion the purple occupies, how deeply the purple penetrates into the base, and finally see whether the purple comes from the inside out or from the outside in.
