For novice jade lovers, how to distinguish between ice jade and fake jade made of glass?

For people who love jade, they dare not buy it because many substitutes similar to jade are often used to impersonate jade. So today I will analyze with you the common fake substitutes for jadeite glass: jadeite's associated mineral albite, commonly known as water foam, ice-type chalcedony and agate, glass-type Xiuyan jade, various colorless semi-precious gemstones and gemstones, etc. Maybe not everyone has easy access to jade, but relatively speaking, there are still certain differences between jade and these substitutes! Next, I will briefly explain to you how to distinguish between ice jade and fake jade made from glass?

High ice egg surface, the gelatinous texture can be seen, and the fine cotton spots can also be seen

Natural glass-type jadeite, carved by Laozi, has a strong luminous feel, but you can still see some small cotton spots!

The first difference lies in its weight, because the first thing you notice is the weight you pick up in your hand. In terms of mass, the density of ice jade is 3.33g per cubic centimeter (industry standard), while the density of glass is relatively light at 2.5g per cubic centimeter. If we are people who often play with jade, if it is a pendant-like ornament, usually, we can tell as soon as we pick it up that the fake jade made of glass is not heavy enough and it will feel light. Relatively speaking, ice jade feels heavy and warm, while glass is smooth and cool to the touch. Of course, if you are a novice, when you come into contact with the same type of ice jade and fake jade made of glass, you will basically feel some difference when you weigh them.

High ice jade leaves, gummy texture, cotton wool, and cotton spots can be seen!

The second difference is the visual light perception of the surface. The light perception of ice jade can be divided into three types: strong fluorescence, glue feeling, and both strong fluorescence and glue feeling. The fluorescence has a different feeling. No matter which one it is, it is not possessed by glass-fake jade. Glass-fake jade only has glass luster.

The third difference is the structure of the jade. As a natural gemstone, ice jadeite, no matter how perfect or icy it is, is still formed by stone and has natural and irregular patterns. There is no such thing as glass, and some people use fake brushed patterns to create patterns and imitate waterlines, but the lines are too rigid and it feels stiff and dull!

However, there will be certain cotton fibers or spots inside the jade, slight crystal structure, etc., which are not found in fake jade made from glass. Some fake jade made from glass have uniform structure and bubbles. Natural ice jade has the properties of jade, and has visual phenomena such as structural rigidity, luster, glue and sheen. There are cotton or fluff spots inside, and at least some fly-wing-like emerald crystals are visible to the naked eye and can be seen with some magnifying glasses. The texture is different, the cotton-like texture is different.

The fourth difference lies in the carving. Fake jade made from glass is usually formed by molding and has no obvious signs of carving, but sometimes it is easy to find signs of molding. Jade is different, because ice jade is usually hand-carved (of course, it cannot be completely ruled out that some local tyrants use ice jade materials to play with machine carving, but this cannot be 100% certain. After all, we are different and we don’t understand the world of local tyrants!)

For novice jade lovers, the four points analyzed above may be difficult to grasp the first point of measuring weight (of course, you can also use the little knowledge of physics, the sinking method, which can generally measure the approximate density), but you should have some feeling for the second, third and fourth points! Because if you want to buy ice jadeite, you still need to know some basic jade knowledge!

If you are really not sure, there is a simple and rough way, which is to go to the local geological institute or gemstone appraisal agency for appraisal, which can be done for about 10 to 20 yuan. Never go for free appraisal or those that charge a few hundred dollars, because it is not that outrageous in reality and those are usually fake institutions. A regular gemstone testing agency can usually issue an appraisal certificate within 10-20 minutes if it is fast.

That’s all I have to say today. I hope this will be helpful to newbies who love jadeite. I hope you will support me!
