Violet jade is so difficult to buy, and I’m always afraid that it will “die in the light”. How should I choose it?

When you buy violet jadeite, are you worried that the violet jadeite you bought will die in the light? When I first got it from the merchant, the color of the jadeite was romantic and elegant. But after I bought it and walked under the sun, I suddenly discovered that the beautiful purple color was gone, and the jadeite became dull and pale. I felt like I bought a fake.

“Death in the light” is indeed a fatal weakness of violet jadeite, but it cannot stop people from loving it. What is even more surprising is that not only has it not depreciated, but it has also frequently been sold at astonishingly high prices at auctions. For example, at the Beijing Jade Auction, a pair of purple jadeite bracelets sold for 190 million yuan; purple jadeite grapes collected by a wealthy man in Ruili were auctioned for 18 million yuan; and the violet glass jadeite - "Zhaoyi Star" is worth up to 600 million yuan...

These figures show people's love for violets. It is also surprising: Why is the value of violet jade so high even though its fatal flaws are so obvious?

Of course, on the one hand, it is because the mysterious, elegant and noble temperament of violet jade has conquered thousands of women and made people addicted to it. On the other hand, it is because violet jade resources are scarce. The reason why violet jade appears purple is because the jade contains the coloring element-manganese. The more manganese, the richer the purple. But in most cases, purple and green coexist. Pure purple jade is extremely rare, so it is very precious. It is not without reason that “red jade, green jade and purple are the most valuable.”

Why does violet jadeite “die in the light”? On the one hand, it is related to the visible spectrum of physical properties, and on the other hand, it is related to the transparency of jade itself.

The reason why violet jade appears purple indoors but turns white in the sunlight is because red has the longest wavelength and violet has the shortest in the spectrum. Affected by the wavelength, the color of purple will appear darker or lighter when it enters people's field of vision in sunlight.

As the saying goes, "Nine out of ten trees are made of wood," this is because the texture of violets is generally poor, not delicate, and has low transparency. The white background reflects light obviously under sunlight, making the overall color of the violet jade white!

What the editor wants to tell you is that not all violet jadeite will “die in the light”. Ordinary light enters the violet jadeite and then refracts out from it, so what we see is that the violet jadeite is easy to fade in color.

Violet jade is generally divided into pink purple, eggplant purple and blue purple. Pink purple is the type of violet jade that is most likely to "die in the light". It is blue purple, eggplant purple or blue purple. Under natural light, the color will appear brighter. The "Zhaoyi Star" mentioned above with a value of 600 million belongs to pink purple, and it is also one of the violet jades that "die in the light".

In fact, when judging the value of violets, whether they will fade in the light is not the key point, but we should return to the main value judgment criteria of jadeite: type, color, and workmanship. If the color is rich but the quality is very dry, the price will naturally not be very high; if the quality is good but the color is not rich, there is a high possibility that it will die when exposed to the light; those top-grade violets with excellent quality, water color and exquisite craftsmanship are naturally the first choice for collection and have great room for appreciation.

Therefore, when judging violet jadeite, don’t simply start from the fact that it “dies in the light”. The type, color, and workmanship are also very important. If you really cannot accept the shortcoming of violet jadeite that it “dies in the light”, then don’t buy it. However, those violet jadeites that are both icy and purple are generally more expensive, so you need to have a certain budget.
