Is the "double-sided carving" technique used in the olive kernel carving of Journey to the West applicable to jade carving?

Recently, a freshman boy from Huai'an, Jiangsu, who likes carving and is interested in Journey to the West, carved 18 characters from the 1986 version of Journey to the West out of olive pits. According to Jade Encyclopedia, the carving technique used is "double-sided carving", which means a human figure is carved on one side of the olive pit, and the character's features on the other side. This carving technique can well express the characteristics of the depicted character; but is this carving technique applicable in jade carving?

In fact, when it comes to jade carving, the sculptor will use different carving techniques according to the inspiration he wants to express in the jade raw material. In terms of figure carving, most of them use the round carving technique, and rarely use the double-sided carving technique. Round carving can give people a three-dimensional feeling. As a technique of all-round three-dimensional carving of jade works, it allows many viewers to appreciate the emotions expressed by the sculptor from different angles.

The most important thing about round sculpture is to shape it according to the situation. It follows two principles in carving. The first is to carve according to the natural form, color, texture and other aesthetics of the jade raw material. The second is to have an idea first and then select the material for carving. No matter which principle the sculptor uses, the finished product will be natural and realistic, giving a lifelike feeling.

It can be said that jade carving rarely uses the "double-sided carving" technique of olive kernel carving, and most of the time it uses round carving. After all, jade figures carved in this way are often more vivid, lively and lifelike. They will use portraits, busts, group portraits, animals and plants and other types of shapes, especially themes such as Buddha, Guanyin and Guan Yu.
