What are the carving proportions of jade gourd?

Plant carving themes are a major category in jade carving, which mainly focus on realism, expressing the authenticity and beauty of plants. There are many kinds of plants in nature. Common carving subjects include: cabbage, gourds, lucky beans, leaves, etc. Most of these subjects are small in shape and are generally used to make pendants, bracelets, etc. Jade gourd is a typical plant carving. The gourd comes from real life and serves as a reference standard for jade carving. So, what are the standards for jade gourd carving?

The gourd looks like two spheres connected from top to bottom to form a new shape. It has a rounded shape, regular and smooth curved surfaces, and the diameter of the upper sphere is slightly smaller than that of the lower sphere.

The jade gourd is based on this basic structure and has two different styles. One is consistent with the plant gourd, consisting of two spheres, and the shape is still spherical. The second method is to use the symmetrical midline of the sphere as a reference, cut it in half, and use the cut shape as the shape of a gourd, that is, the front side is hemispherical and the bottom is flat. Compared with the sphere, it is simpler, more conducive to inlaying, and highlights the curved surface of the front side.

The size parameters of jade gourd can be summarized as: height, width, and thickness. The height is divided into total height, upper spherical height and lower spherical height. The width is divided into upper spherical width and lower spherical width, that is, the sphere diameter. The proportional relationship between these parameters is closely related to the value of the golden ratio of 0.618. The height of common jade gourds is roughly 30~10mm.

According to the definition of the standardized shape of the gourd, since the parts that make up the gourd are two spheres, it can be inferred that: the height of the upper sphere = the width of the upper sphere, and the height of the lower sphere = the width of the lower sphere. This is an idealized shape. In reality, the actual object has slight deviations, that is, it is not a standard sphere. When appreciating it as a single sphere, it looks more beautiful if the width is slightly larger than the height.

In fact, as far as jade gourds are concerned, the realistic shape is more magical than the imaginative shape. Only realism and vividness can meet the public's aesthetic requirements, and it is also an important prerequisite for purchasing jade gourds.
