How do you usually identify the authenticity of jade? Don’t use these 5 wrong methods

Today's jade market is full of mixed goods and there are too many fakes. If you don't have professional knowledge and high identification skills, it is very easy to be deceived. In order to distinguish the authenticity of jadeite, people have also learned various strange identification methods. Let us see today whether these methods are reliable or not.

1. Scratching glass with jadeite

We often hear a saying: Jadeite that can scratch glass is jade, and jadeite that cannot scratch glass is fake. This saying has been wrong for decades. Please don’t believe this statement. Different glasses have different corresponding hardness. There are many jades that are harder than glass, so it is impossible to judge whether it is jadeite or not. Another point is that if you use jade to scratch glass, the two will collide and both will be damaged.

2. Burning Jade with Hair

Wrap your hair around jade and then burn it with fire. If the hair is burnt off, it means the jade is fake, otherwise it means the jade is real. This method is the most widespread and the most misleading. When hair is tied to jade, it will keep burning because it does not reach the ignition point in a short time. However, if it keeps burning, it will break. And this effect will occur not only on jade, but also on any jade or glass. Therefore, this method is quite unreliable.

3. Measure the temperature of jadeite by hand

Test jade by touching it with your hands. If it feels cool, it is jade. If it feels warm, it is a fake. This method is completely useless. If it is B grade jade, or B+C jade, it will also feel cool when you touch it with your hands, so this will not work and it is impossible to judge at all.

4. The sound of striking jade

We often knock two bracelets against each other to listen to whether the sound is crisp, or directly knock on the jadeite to listen to the sound it makes to determine whether it is natural jadeite. Generally speaking, natural jade makes a crisp sound when knocked, while processed jade makes a dull sound when knocked. This method is correct and we have used it frequently before. With the continuous development of counterfeiting technology, this method is no longer reliable. Nowadays, the fillings of B-grade jadeite have been improved, which makes it crisp after being knocked.

5. Use your tongue or water droplets to measure jadeite

If you lick jade with your tongue you will feel an electric shock, and that is real jade, there is no basis for this at all. There is also a theory that if you drop a little water on jade, if the water drop does not fall off, then it is real jade, if it falls off, then it is fake jade. This theory is ridiculous, and the same applies to polished B-grade jade, so it is not credible.

So if you want to identify jadeite, don't use these 5 methods, they are very unreliable~
