You know how to distinguish the types of jade, but do you know how to distinguish the water content of jade?

When you first come into contact with jade, you may be dizzy with all the jade terminology! Take the grading of jadeite’s “quality and water” for example, which can confuse beginners. "Type" is easier to understand, which refers to the structure of jade. The industry has vivid terms to distinguish it, such as "glass type", "ice type", "glutinous type", "bean type", etc.!

So, what is water? How to distinguish them? Today, the editor will share some experience about the water of jade with jade lovers.

The water of jade refers to the transparency of jade, also known as its translucency. The water in jade does not exist alone. It is only when the type and base complement each other that jade will have water. For example, if an old mine jade has small crystal particles, tight structure and a clean base, then its transparency can be called water.

In the jade industry, experts often talk about long water, sufficient water, short water, and poor water.

Good or bad water, more or less water, will affect the quality of jadeite. Jadeite with full and long water head will have high transparency and appear crystal clear with a “watery” feeling; on the contrary, if the water head of jadeite is short and dry, most of the light cannot pass through the jadeite, and the jade will appear rigid and lack agility.

We jade merchants usually use a spotlight to shine on the jade, and measure the length of the water head based on the depth of the light, which is called "a few points of water" in the jade industry. It is generally divided into "one point water", "two points water" and "three points water", and the transparency gradually increases from low to high (as shown in the picture above).

"One point of water" means that light can penetrate to 3mm of the jadeite;

"Two-point water" means that light can penetrate to 6mm of the jadeite. Generally speaking, the water head of jadeite that can reach "two-point water" on the market is already very good.

"Three-point water" means that light can penetrate to 9mm of the jade, which has a very high transparency and appears particularly vivid and lively.

Finally, the editor emphasizes one point: Jadeite with good quality may not necessarily have good water content, but jadeite with water content is generally good. The term "water" is based on the premise that jadeite has good quality!
