When friends are buying jade jewelry, in addition to boasting about the good quality, high color, and rich water content of the jade, the merchants will often mention the word "old pit". In their eyes, "old pit" seems to be a guarantee of high-quality jade. So what exactly is "old pit"?

Friends who are new to jade may be confused. What does “old mine” mean? Does old refer to the age when the jade was formed underground? Or does it refer to the people who discover jade? Or does it mean that it was made in the "old pit"?

The so-called "old pit" is based on the year in which the jade mine was mined. "Old pit" is relative to the "new pit". If the mine has been mining jade for a long time, then it is called an "old pit". In fact, from a geological point of view, the geological era in which the jadeite in the "old mine" and "new mine" was formed is the same.

Jade practitioners have discovered in long-term practice that jade from "old mines" is of better quality and contains more moisture. So why is this?

The "Laokeng" deposits are mainly distributed in the valleys of the Wulou River and its tributaries in Myanmar, concentrated in the 30km long riverbed of the lower reaches of the Wulou River from Sanka Village to the Mengma area. They are deposits formed by the erosion and deposition of river water.

River sedimentary deposits were discovered to be relatively easy to mine, so they were first developed and utilized by people, which gave rise to the term "old pit". Also because of the effect of river water, jade with uneven texture, such as cracks, coarse grains, loose structure, and impurities will be washed away, and what are finally retained in the riverbed are jades with denser texture and finer structure.

Therefore, compared with other mines, it is equivalent to the river water helping people to screen it, so the probability of mining high-quality jade from the "old mine" is relatively high.

Of course, the so-called old mine production is not a guarantee of jade quality. Truly excellent jade handicrafts cannot be summarized by just the word "old mine". A specific analysis of the water quality and even the craftsmanship is required to draw conclusions. Friends must be careful when purchasing. I wish everyone can buy the right jade.
