What are the “Three Stars and Two Gods”? In Taoist stories, there are three auspicious stars in the sky, which are in charge of "happiness, wealth and longevity" . In modern times, people have added the God of Joy and the God of Wealth. These five immortals often appear in jade carvings, sometimes alone and sometimes together. The Three Stars refer to the Three Gods of Fortune, Lu, and Longevity in Chinese folk beliefs and the Taoist pantheon. The Three Stars originated from the Three Officials of Taoism, namely the Heaven Official, the Earth Official, and the Water Official . The belief in the Three Officials originated from the primitive religion's natural worship of heaven, earth and water. Later, Taoism called them the Three Yuan Emperors, namely the Heavenly Official Shangyuan Emperor, the Earthly Official Zhongyuan Emperor, and the Water Official Xiayuan Emperor . On the birthdays of the three stars , namely the Shangyuan Festival on the 15th day of the first lunar month, the Zhongyuan Festival on the 15th day of the seventh lunar month, and the Xiayuan Festival on the 15th day of the tenth lunar month, people would worship the Three Officials, hoping that the Heavenly Official would bless them, the Earthly Official would forgive their sins, and the Water Official would relieve them of their disasters . Later they evolved into the three gods of Fu, Lu and Shou. 1. Lucky Star Lucky Star. The ancients said that those who are illuminated by Jupiter are blessed, so it is also called the Lucky Star. He stands on the left side of the three stars, holding a child, or holding auspicious items such as a ruyi or spring couplets. The culture of blessing has permeated the body of the Chinese nation, and jade carvers have continued this culture into jade. In traditional concepts, people believe that there are five blessings in the world: longevity, wealth, peace, virtue, and a good death. 2. Luxing There are six stars above the Big Dipper, which are collectively called Wenchang Palace. The sixth star among them is Luxing, also known as "Wenchang" and "Wenquxing". "The Book of Celestial Officials" in the "Records of the Grand Historian" says: "It is called Wenchang Palace: the first is the general, the second is the deputy general, the third is the noble minister, the fourth is the life manager, the fifth is the center manager, and the sixth is the salary manager." Si Lu is the star of fortune that is in charge of fame, wealth and official position . After the establishment of the imperial examination system in the Sui and Tang dynasties, Luxing became the god who dominated the fate of scholars. Scholars all over the world paid homage to him. His image was of a god wearing an official hat, holding a ruyi, and standing among the three stars. 3. Birthday The South Pole Star, revered by Taoism as the South Pole Immortal and the Great Emperor of Longevity, is in charge of lifespan . Longevity is the first of the five blessings, but celebrating birthdays is a widespread folk custom, so the birthday star is listed separately, which shows the important position of longevity in the hearts of Chinese people. The big forehead is the most iconic feature of the birthday star, and it is also an image of longevity. In addition, the birthday star often holds a longevity peach and a walking stick, which fully demonstrates the meaning of longevity. 4. God of Happiness The God of Happiness has no star and is invisible. In traditional paintings, the God of Happiness is very similar to the God of Fortune, and is often paired with a magpie or a spider to make it easier for people to distinguish them. The Book of Changes believes that there must be something missing in a person's birth chart, and any of the five elements that can make up for the missing will be that person's lucky star. People generally believe that things that bring joy to people are given by the God of Joy. 5. God of Wealth The God of Wealth can be divided into the civil and military gods of wealth. If it is the God of Wealth, he must be holding a gold ingot in his hand. If it is the God of Wealth, Guan Gong must have a long sword and Zhao Gongming must have a silver whip. If it appears with the elements of happiness, wealth, longevity and joy, it is often the God of Wealth. "Wealth" is one of the universal cultures regardless of race or belief. In jade carvings, there are many themes and images that symbolize wealth. In addition to the God of Wealth, copper coins, cornucopias, money trees, the mythical beast Pixiu, etc. are typical symbols of wealth. "Fu Lu Shou Xi Cai" has rich cultural and artistic value, and is also a unique auspicious belief of the Chinese people. As the times progress, the essence of these traditional cultures should also be inherited, promoted and developed.
