Jade Knowledge Lecture: What are the optical properties of jade?

Different jades can emit different light, and the light emitted by different grades and qualities is different. Let's take a look at what lights there are.

Stone luster: Stone luster is the most original luster of jadeite, which lacks brightness just like ordinary stone. Generally speaking, this luster will change after polishing, but some jadeite with too strong stone properties and too large particles is difficult to improve!

Waxy luster: Waxy luster mainly appears on jadeite of lower quality, and the main problem lies in the crystal surface. It's loose, the seeds are tender, and the light transmission effect is poor. No matter how good the water head is, it feels loose.

Glass luster: Glass luster is very easy to understand. It has no special reflection, refraction or scattering effects and is as bright as glass. The quality of jade crystals with this luster is also very average. The arrangement order of the crystals is generally tight and it is commonly found in tender jade.

Rigid luster: also known as rigidity and steel flavor, refers to the fact that jade has a firm and strong taste like steel. This type of jade is very hard and the gaps between the internal crystals are very small. Jadeite that can be tough is generally of good quality.

Oily luster: Jadeite that emits this luster is like being coated with a layer of oil. This requires the jadeite crystals to be quite fine, otherwise it would be difficult to achieve this kind of luster!

Gluing: Jade glueing means that jade looks like flowing glue, and the glueing requires a very fine degree of jade particles. Unlike the requirement for neat arrangement of crystals in the process of crystallization, the requirement for gelation is disordered arrangement of crystals. Therefore, the appearance of glue and the appearance of gloss have different aesthetic qualities.

Fluorescence: also commonly known as "fluorescence". When we observe high-quality ice or glass jade jewelry, we can observe a soft, hazy white light attached to the polished curved surface. It feels like a thin layer of mist remaining on the jade, which is fluorescence. Fluorescence is an optical phenomenon visible to the naked eye.

The luster of jadeite has very high requirements on the transparency of jadeite, and also has very high requirements on the neatness of the arrangement of jadeite crystals. Jadeite that can sparkle is of very good quality, and this phenomenon usually only occurs in jadeite that is high ice or above.
