Speaking of gold and silver inlay, everyone must have heard of it more or less, but many jade carvers don’t even know what it is! This is not a joke, there are indeed many jade carvers who don’t know what this is, and may even misunderstand it as gold inlaid with jade! We all know “gold and silver”, but what does “wrong” mean? The explanation of the word "错" in "Shuowen Jiezi" is: "错, means gold coating, from 金, sound". Duan Yucai, a Qing Dynasty philologist, commented: "Cuo is commonly written as tu, and also as cuo, which means to put gold on it." Therefore, in a broad sense, any object with gold and silver patterns arranged on it can be called gold and silver inlay. Gold and silver inlay is a relatively unique skill among the major jade crafts. The earliest gold and silver inlay appeared on bronze ware during the Shang and Zhou dynasties, and was mainly used as decorative patterns on various bronze utensils, chariots, horses, weapons and other practical objects. The technique is to draw exquisite patterns on the surface of the object and chisel out grooves according to the shape of the patterns. Pure gold or silver is pulled into thin wires or pressed into thin sheets and embedded into the pattern, and then polished and polished. Of course, this should not be confused with gold and silver inlay and gold inlaid with jade. The use of gold and silver inlay in jade carving began in the Qing Dynasty, and appeared in the form of an imported product - Hindustan jade. By the end of the Qing Dynasty, due to the decline of national strength, the production of jade carvings gradually declined, and the more expensive and labor-intensive gold and silver inlaid jade wares became unpredictable, and the corresponding production techniques were gradually lost. Gold and silver inlaid jades are extremely rare in the jade market, simply because the craftsmanship of gold and silver inlay is very demanding, and the embedded gold threads must be flush with the surface of the jade to achieve a naturally smooth, as if-one-in-one artistic effect. Therefore, compared with ordinary "gold inlaid jade" consumer products on the market, it is more difficult to process and cannot be mass-produced at all.
