To play with jade, you need to know how to see the texture of jade

Jadeite is the king of jade and has a profound history and culture. From ancient times to the present, it has been highly praised by people. It is one of the most popular and most preferred jade varieties by Chinese people.

There is a saying in the jade industry: "Jade has no patterns, and the sky has no clouds." Under the influence of natural laws, jade itself has its own lines, but one thing many jade lovers don’t know is that there is a big difference between cutting the jade along the lines or against the lines.

1. Are the lines on jade a flaw?

Nowadays, counterfeiting methods are common, and the jade market is even more mixed. When it comes to "textures", many people think that they are "flaws" and are likely to be "fakes"! So are the patterns on jade “flaws”?

In fact, jade lovers are not wrong. Generally speaking, jade with defective lines refers to B-grade and C-grade jade that have been dyed or processed by other means, which show acid etching marks or orange peel patterns.

What we call "lines" refer to the lines that naturally appear on jade in its natural environment.

The texture of jade is academically defined as the structure of rock. It refers to the texture formed by the bonding surfaces between the crystals that make up jade, or the texture formed when one mineral fills the gaps between crystals of another type during the formation of jade. It does not affect its price at all.

In other words, the natural texture of jade refers to the direction of the long axis of the jadeite crystals.

Why are the patterns related to the direction of the long columns?

This is because jadeite raw stone is formed under high pressure in the earth's crust, and most of the columnar minerals will grow in the direction of the least pressure. It's like a small grass growing between two big rocks. It will grow out from the cracks between the rocks.

2. How do you view the value of jade’s patterns?

There is also a difference between longitudinal grain and reverse grain in jadeite raw stones. This positive and negative trend directly affects the value of the entire jade.

1. The role of the grain and reverse grain

"Jade cannot be made into a useful object without being carved." The natural patterns in jade provide a special path for jade craftsmen during the production and processing of jade. By following this processing path, you can obtain better jade products and retain the original appearance of the jade.

The best effect will be achieved when jade is carved along the grain of the stone, and the overall appearance will be softer.

If the jade is cut in the reverse direction, it will be relatively ugly after polishing. The jadeite as a whole will show a rough texture effect, which feels bad. The color of the jadeite will appear deeper and the color distribution will be very uneven.

2. The price impact of the grain and reverse grain

From the buyer's perspective, they hope to see the reverse grain of jadeite. Because of the different cutting directions, the colors seen will be somewhat different, and the estimates of the jadeite's value will also be very different.

From the seller's perspective, jadeite cut along the grain shows richer colors, is easier to process, and can be sold at a good price.

If you cut along the grain, you can show more beautiful sides, and the value will naturally increase. Cutting against the grain reveals the true inner qualities, allowing people to carefully evaluate its true value. One is favorable and the other is unfavorable, there are two different destinies.
