Jade carving craft

Jade carving is a unique skill in my country. It has a long history, superb skills and diverse styles. During the thousands of years of development, excellent jade carvers have created many unique jade carving techniques. In short, there are ten types in total. In Chinese jade culture represented by jadeite, these techniques are naturally inherited from generation to generation. Below, let us learn about the ten major techniques of jade carving.

1: Round Sculpture

Also known as three-dimensional sculpture, it refers to a three-dimensional sculpture that is not compressed and can be appreciated from many angles. Because round sculptures are extremely three-dimensional, the sculptor is required to carve from the front, back, left, right, top, middle and bottom, and the selection of jade must be of high quality. The carvings can be figures, animals, or still lifes, but are not suitable for depicting natural scenes.

2: Relief

That is, a statue or image is carved on a flat base, the outline of the shape is similar to that of an oil painting, with varying convexity and concavity, and it is not bound by any rules, and it is mainly appreciated from the front. The biggest difference between relief and round sculpture is that relief uses compression method to process objects. According to the different degrees of compression space, relief can be divided into shallow relief, medium relief and deep relief. These three types of relief have their own characteristics.

3: Openwork

Also called hollow carving, it is the further development of relief carving. This is a carving technique based on relief, which hollows out the background part. Its purpose is to make the outline of the statue clearer and make the work show exquisite and delicate artistic effect. Openwork carving makes jade carvings endless, with endless patterns and scenes, and scenes of different distances, but the production process is complicated, difficult to make, time-consuming and labor-intensive, but the artistic effect is the best.

4: Inner carving

It is used to carve a still life with two or three layers of jade inside and outside. It is a relatively complex craft, also known as the "unique skill" of jade carving. From the Republic of China period to the early days of the founding of the People's Republic of China, the art of jade carving has been in a blank state due to the limitation of tool conditions and the unskilled jade carving technology. In the late 1970s, jade carving artists explored inner carving techniques and achieved groundbreaking results. His works include the "Colorful Bat Basket" designed by Li Hongcai. There are two bats carved in the basket, with their legs crossed. Another piece is a spherical object with three or four layers inside, each layer of which is carved with scenes or patterns, and can be rotated for appreciation, which is a masterpiece of jade carving.

5: Spiral combination

Industrial thread and assembly technology are used in jade carving handicrafts, which is a combination of threads. In the late 1980s, large jade carvings were very popular.
