The most common jade carving techniques are revealed, and now you will learn more

Jade processing has a history of 7,000 years along with Chinese cultural history. It has a long history in our country and has always been loved by the Chinese people. Jade has rich and varied colors, but the value of jade is not just determined by its quality and color. Jade has an aesthetic that makes people unable to extricate themselves. The jade carvings have been polished by masters and have become fine products admired by everyone in the jade industry. This shows the importance of jade carvings.

As the saying goes, gold and silver have a price but jade is priceless. Jade is a treasure in the hands of the Chinese people and the soul in their hearts. Throughout the long history of jade carving, our ancestors created very advanced tools and jade carving methods. It is difficult for laymen to guess or remember how many skills a professional jade carver needs to master. Today, we will briefly introduce the most common jade carving techniques.

1. Relief

Relief is when a jade carver carves out the image he wants to create on a flat surface, making it separate from the plane of the raw material. It refers to relief carving, which includes shallow relief, deep relief, and colorful carving. Such as: happiness, wealth, longevity, and good fortune, etc.

2. Openwork

Openwork carving refers to hollow carving, which retains the raised part of the object and partially hollows out the back part. On the basis of the relief, the background part is hollowed out, and the back is mostly expressed in the form of a screen. There are cross-shaped hollow carvings, circular hollow carvings, decorative hollow carvings, etc.

3. Carving

Hollow carving refers to hollowing out the parts of jade that do not express objects, leaving only the parts that express objects. It is not hollow, but can be deep hollow (such as vases, pen holders, etc.) or shallow hollow (such as pen washers, ashtrays, etc.). The shape of jadeite jadeware that has been carved can better highlight the subject matter and is more three-dimensional, which is breathtaking.

The main feature of openwork carving is to express the three-dimensional spatial layering of objects, which is developed on the basis of perforation. Hollow carving is difficult and has very high requirements on the stone, carving knife techniques, and the skills of the sculptor. The stone for hollow carving must be fine and pure, and the hollowed-out part cannot have any cracks or sand grids, otherwise it will break easily.

4. Thread Sculpting

Line carving refers to line engraving and silk carving, such as: people's hair, animal hair and water waves.

5. Intaglio

Intaglio carving refers to a method of carving concave parts, such as Yin and Yang Bagua.

6. Round Sculpture

A round sculpture, also known as a three-dimensional sculpture, refers to a non-compressed three-dimensional sculpture that can be appreciated from multiple directions and angles. Sculpture in the round is an overall expression of art on a sculpture, and viewers can see all sides of the object from different angles. It requires the sculptor to carve from all directions: front, back, left, right, top, middle and bottom.

As the saying goes, "30% material, 70% workmanship." In addition to the quality and texture of the raw materials, a large part of the value of jade lies in the superb carving craftsmanship. “If jade is not carved, it will not become a useful object.” Carving is an important step in the process from raw materials to finished products.
