Jade Appreciation | What is the charm of this piece that has won three jade carving awards at the same time?

Jade carving art is one of the most important components of jade culture. Every year, the jade carving industry holds corresponding selection competitions. All jade carvers are proud to win awards in the competitions. But there is such a jade work that actually won three major awards: the "Tiangong Award", the "Shengong Award" and the "Jade Carving Master Award"! One can't help but wonder what kind of work has such great charm?

▲《Unstained by Dust》【Creators: Yu Fengye, Chen Qizhen】

This is an unremarkable jade work at first glance. It is grayish overall and lacks moisture and transparency. It continues Yu Fengye’s consistent core creative concept, “green withering” .

Yu Feng also believes that the lotus grows out of the mud but remains unstained, the lotus leaves wither and the lotus flowers bloom, and human life is also like this, from birth to brilliance and then to old age and death. A good jade carving should enable people to see the changes in society and realize the meaning of life.

After causing some controversy, "Unstained by Dust" finally won the bronze medal of the "Tiangong Award", the silver medal of the 8th China Jade Carving "Shengong Award", and the gold medal of the "Caiyun Cup Master Award" of the 5th Yunnan Jade Carving Masters Exhibition.

Zhou Dunyi wrote in "On the Love of Lotus", "I only love the lotus that grows out of the mud but remains unstained, and washes in the clear water but remains coquettish." The jadeite work "Unstained by Dust" also has a similar birth experience as its namesake.

Initially, it was just a piece of raw stone without any water color. Its gray appearance and many flaws determined that it would not have much value. According to the trajectory of fate, it would probably become only one or several ordinary sculptures without any features and value. But by chance, it met Yu Fengye.

Yu Feng is also a jade carving artist who is not bound by "tradition", dares to break new ground, and respects the natural beauty of jade. He is "short in stature but with a broad soul."

But when he saw this "ordinary" jade for the first time, he was deeply attracted. Was it because of the difference in quality, water quality and color? Does not exist.

In Yu Fengye's eyes, its mottled colors are a mysterious portrayal of nature, and the cracks on its body are the ingenious carvings of nature. All he needs to do is do as the famous sculptor Rodin said - awaken its innate beauty!

Therefore, this stone traveled all the way from the Pingzhou public auction in Guangdong to the warehouse of Yu Fengye Studio, and then after a long wait for design and conception, finally, construction began!

The purple lotus is transformed into a Buddha's hand using a surrealist technique, adding further life significance to the work.

The black color represents the lotus leaf, the green color represents the water droplet, the clear water sways the withered lotus, the withered lotus supports the purple lotus. A person’s life is full of ups and downs, with excitement, loneliness, struggle and helplessness... Life is a cycle, and the world is eternal!

“All the people who work with jade are constantly making money!” Yu Feng once lamented this, but he hopes that jade carving can have fewer commercial processes and more pure jade carvers who work with their heart.

"Unstained by Dust" is a carving of a lotus, but it actually depicts the author's inner perseverance and the true meaning of being a human being. While giving the stubborn stone a new life, it also allows people to see the brilliance of jade carving art. This may be the charm of the work!
