The layman looks at the color, the expert looks at the type! Did you buy the right jade?

There is a saying in the jargon when buying jadeite, which is "laymen look at the color, experts look at the quality." This "color" refers to the "color" of jadeite. This is very easy, and even a layman can tell the quality of color. Rich colors are naturally good, and pale colors are not very satisfactory to look at. However, those who know the business know that when buying jadeite, the more important thing is the “quality” ! If the quality of jade is not good, no matter how rich its color is, its value will not be high. Today I would like to talk to you about the "quality" of jade!

The type of jade simply refers to the fineness of its texture, that is, the size of its internal grains and the density of its structure. Generally speaking, the smaller the grains and the denser the structure, the better the "type" of jade. There is a saying about jadeite that "36 types of water, 72 types of beans, and 108 types of blue". It can be seen that its types are complex and numerous. It will take a long time to explain them in detail one by one. The industry divides jadeite into four categories, namely bean type, glutinous type, ice type, and glass type.

Bean seeds

From the name, you can imagine the texture of beans or soy milk, which is the appearance of bean-type jade.

Bean-type jade has low transparency and its structural crystals are short columnar, arranged like beans. The coarser grains can have their crystal boundaries seen with the naked eye. According to the size of the grains, it is divided into three categories: coarse bean type, medium bean type and fine bean type. The fine bean type has a tighter structure and less obvious granularity, a bit like the feeling of soy milk, while the coarse bean type has an obvious granularity and the jade is loose and not delicate. The medium bean variety is in between.

Bean-type jade is a low- to medium-grade jade. It is the most common type of jade. It has average value and is often used to make mid-range jewelry, jade carvings, etc. The green bean-type jadeite looks quite pleasing from a distance, and the grains are scattered across the surface when viewed up close. In addition, the price is affordable, and the quantity is large, so there is a broad market space for it. Bean-type jadeite is a very large family, and there are more than a dozen types on the market, such as ice bean type and sugar bean type.

Glutinous

The internal structure of glutinous jade is clear, but it is not translucent and is mostly coarse-grained and granular. A good glutinous jade is like a bowl of slow-cooked glutinous rice porridge, in which the soup and the grains are integrated into one, and it is delicate and moist.

The glutinous jade is finer than the bean-type jade, and is translucent and lustrous, more transparent than the bean-type. It is also a mid-range jade, but the glutinous jade is not necessarily more expensive than the bean-type. The glutinous jade is also divided into coarse, medium and fine according to the size of the crystal particles. Sometimes the price of fine bean-type jade is even higher than the coarse glutinous jade!

In addition, if the bean variety is made very thin, it will look a bit translucent and can easily be mistaken for the glutinous variety. Pay attention to the thickness when distinguishing it.

Ice

Ice jade looks like a piece of ice, seemingly transparent but not quite, and its transparency is higher than that of glutinous jade. Starting from the ice type, there is no distinction between the coarse and fine particles, because large particles cannot achieve the same transparency as ice cubes.

Although the ice type has no particles, it contains impurities such as cotton and stone flowers inside. Therefore, the ice type is divided into ice type, high ice type and ice glass type. The difference between ice type and high ice type lies in the amount of cotton they contain. The less cotton they contain, the more transparent and lustrous they are. The texture of ice glass jade is almost reaching that of glass jade, but there is still a little cotton in it, and it is not completely free of impurities.

Ice-type jade is already a high-end jade. Compared with glutinous and bean-type jade, it has no granular feeling and has ice-like transparency. If it has rich and full colors, it is even more worth buying!

Glass Type

Glass-type jade has a moist and uniform color and extremely high transparency, and is the top-grade type of jade. Especially well-polished jade, when viewed under the light, you can see circles at the edges, which is called gloss or glue in the jargon.

The price of glass-type jade is also top-notch. Normally, the ones with good transparency but cotton can only be classified as ice glass-type jade. Glass-type jade is very rare. A colorless glass-type bracelet costs around one million. If it is glass-type or emerald green jade, it is simply the best jade and rare!
