(a) Test the weight. The specific gravity of jadeite is between 3.3 and 3.36. Except for California jade produced in California, USA and Transvaal jade from South Africa, which have a specific gravity of 3.25 to 3.48, which is similar to jadeite, the specific gravity of other products is relatively light. In particular, fired jadeite, rubber jade, pink stone, green jadeite and Xinyi stone do not feel heavy in the hand like jadeite.

(2) Distinguish color. Jade comes in opaque, translucent, and nearly transparent colors, and its colors range from emerald green, apple green to white, red, blue, etc. It has bright colors, pleasant luster, and is not easy to change color. The color is evenly distributed, clear, natural, crystal clear and dignified. The emerald green is all over the place; the color of the gum jade is not bright, all over the place; the color of the pink stone is superficial and not bright; the South African jade is turbid and yellowish, and when you shine a light in the dark, the green color disappears and turns to yellow. The color of electric jade is green with floating blue, with blue spots or blue threads in the color, and some yellowness. The color is far inferior to the emerald green of real jade. If there are cracks in the electric jade, the blue threads are more obvious, while the color of real jade is the same inside and outside the cracks. If electric jade is placed for a long time, its color will fade and gradually turn into yellow, blue and white. If it is fried in boiling oil, the green will fade away completely, while the color of real jade will never change. To dye jadeite, just use a cotton swab dipped in correction fluid to rub it, and it will immediately turn into azure blue. (3) Check the inclusions. There are often gaseous inclusions in jadeite, while the inclusions in artificial glass are round or diamond-shaped. Real jade has no bubbles.

(iv) Check hardness. The hardness of jade is 6~7. It has a tight crystal structure, hard texture, uneven and granular cracks, and a low and firm sound when knocked. The texture of burned jadeite is loose, with a hardness of 4 to 5. The broken part is smooth and shiny, just like glass. You can scratch the jadeite lightly with the tip of real jade, which cannot be scratched. The sound of knocking on the jadeite is clear and crisp, like knocking on a glass. If you scratch the glue jade lightly with a knife, a mark will appear.

(V) Evaluation criteria When evaluating jade, one mainly looks at its color and "water". The intensity of the pigment, degree of transparency, uniformity of color, and "defects". The best color is the dark green color like the holly leaves after rain and sunlight. The lighter the color, the worse it is, and the color should be even. Any spots, traces or cracks are defects. The higher the transparency, the better; the best ones are dark green, clear, crystal clear and solemn. High-quality jadeite is a treasure among jades. One hundred taels of gold can’t buy one tael of green jadeite, so it is called the king of jade. Inferior colored jade is of very low value or even worthless.
