Jade carving: Why are there more and more molded jade pieces nowadays?

The ultimate value of jade is largely reflected in the level of carving craftsmanship. Hand-carved things have different levels of craftsmanship, coordination and application of various colors and strands, and can use craftsmanship to eliminate imperfect parts from pattern design and then highlight perfect or special parts. The expressions are vivid, the lines are beautiful and smooth, the whole pattern is spiritual, and each piece is different. There are no two works that are exactly the same. A good carving can perfectly display the craftsmanship, cultural connotation, and stone characteristics. A good craftsman can use his own hands to give the stone a spiritual life.

If the quality of jade itself determines 60% of the price of jade, then among the other factors, carving accounts for at least 30%, and even ultimately determines the success or failure of a jade article: a crude carving will certainly not even be able to recover the price of the material, so in many cases, the price of carving has exceeded the value of the jade itself. A very ordinary piece of jade material, after clever color matching and creative carving, the final jade article may even appreciate by dozens of times!

Of course, modern hand-carving is not strictly "hand-made" in the traditional sense. Instead, it uses high-speed motors to drive various high-speed rotating diamond drill heads to cut jade materials. However, how to cut and what shape it will be cut into depends entirely on the skill of the sculptor. Just like no matter what brush you use, the final picture is still determined by the painter's own cultivation and skills. Therefore, we still call the craft that relies on manual shaping hand-carving. It's just that the traditional jade grinding wheel has been changed into today's diamond drill grinding head, and the fine sand on the riverside has been replaced with harder silicon carbide abrasive, making cutting faster and more efficient.

Note that this is also an important reference indicator for distinguishing ancient jade from modern jade based on processing traces. After all, few people are willing to use old techniques to carve jade because the efficiency is too low.

However, hand carving is still time-consuming and laborious. More importantly, not everyone can carve beautiful jade with a diamond, just like not everyone can paint a beautiful picture with a paintbrush. If you pay attention, you can see that a large number of jade articles can only become street goods after being poorly processed. This is also an important reason for the serious waste of jade resources.
