Carving is an ancient art. Generally, carving starts from the outside, carving the desired shape from the outside of the material. According to the techniques of Chinese jade carving, it can be divided into 8 carving techniques, namely: line carving, thin carving, round carving, relief carving, inner carving, concave carving, color carving and hollow carving. Today we will tell you about these 8 carving techniques:

one

- Thread Sculpture-

Line carving, as the name suggests, is to carve patterns on the surface of jade using lines. As the name suggests, it is to use a single line to express on the surface of jade. Its advantage is that it can engrave extremely fine text or patterns on the surface of jade.

- Thin carving-

That is, a very shallow relief with pictorial meaning. "Boyi" carved products have always been known for their "emphasis on elegance, exquisite workmanship, and close to painting principles". It is a unique art that integrates calligraphy, seal cutting, and painting, and is between painting and carving.

III

- Sculpture in the round -

A round sculpture is a three-dimensional sculpture, also known as a three-dimensional sculpture. It is the overall expression of art on the sculpture, and the viewer can see all sides of the object from different angles. It requires the sculptor to carve from all directions: front, back, left, right, top, middle and bottom. A good round sculpture has a clear and strong main body, which can be seen at a glance. If you look at it carefully, you can get more information from its shape, main body, lines and other aspects, and appreciate a broader artistic conception.

IV

- Relief -

The spatial structure of a relief can be a three-dimensional solid form, or it can have a certain plane form; it can be attached to a certain carrier, or it can exist relatively independently. The difference between relief and round sculpture lies in its relative flatness and three-dimensionality. Depending on the depth of the stone removal of the image, it can be divided into shallow relief and high relief. Bas-relief is a single-layer sculpture with relatively simple content; high relief is a multi-layer sculpture with more complex content.

- Inner carving -

Inner carving is a jade carving technique that involves carving deep into the jade material to create round and relief shapes. Inner carving is a more complicated technique, in which two or three layers of scenery are carved inside and outside a piece of jade. The jade carving industry calls it a "unique skill." The main carvings are birds, flowers, grass, etc. in the railings. The carvings must be detailed, and the figures, animals, and plants in each compartment must appear lifelike.

- Intaglio -

In contrast to relief, it is a recessed pattern or shape carved on a flat surface. Also known as Yin carving. It is a kind of carving technique that carves into the surface of the carving material to form a depression, so that the text or pattern is recessed under the hook edge and lower than the plane of the material. It relies on skilled and accurate techniques to make the lines have starting and ending points, pauses, and depth.

Seven

- Colorful Sculpture-

Color carving makes use of the color, skin color and texture of jade to integrate it into the creative subject matter, giving the work a sense of natural harmony. The beauty of the colors and the clever carvings all come down to the word “cleverness”. Only when the "cleverness" is just right and the two elements complement each other, can the work have artistic appeal and make the viewers understand and savor it endlessly.

eight

- Openwork carving -

Hollow carving, also known as openwork carving, means that the carving is not limited to one side of the jade material, but penetrates the jade material and carves out hollows, so that there are many spaces in the jade piece that are connected to both sides.

Jade is the most beautiful stone. And this beauty is given by the hands of the jade carver. These exquisite jade carving techniques perfectly interpret the nature of the jade itself. It seems like carving jade, but also like carving the person in your heart.
