I have worn jade beads for so long, and now I know that different numbers of beads have different meanings

Buddha said that there are many troubles in the world. Just recite "Namo Amitabha" and move a bead to relieve your worries. Because when chanting the Buddha's name, one must eliminate all distracting thoughts and achieve a pure mind, it is also called the "Pure Heart Pearl."

Most people wear a Zen bracelet with 18 beads, but the number of beads is not particularly important. The principle is to wear it so that it fits perfectly on the wrist, to calm the mind and to ask for Buddha's blessing.

Twelve

It represents the "Twelve Links of Dependent Origination", which is double cause and effect. This is the iron rule that the Buddha explained about the continuum of life and death.

Fourteen

It represents Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva and all sentient beings in the ten directions, three periods of time, and six realms, sharing the same compassion and aspirations, enabling all sentient beings to obtain the "fourteen kinds of fearless merits."

Eighteen

Commonly known as the "Eighteen Sons", the so-called "Eighteen" here refers to the "Eighteen Realms", namely six roots, six dusts, and six consciousnesses.

Twenty-one

It represents the "Ten Stages", "Ten Perfections" and "Buddha Fruit", covering the 21 stages that a Bodhisattva goes through from Nirvana to Buddhahood.

Twenty-seven

Each bead represents a Buddhist saint, totaling to the twenty-seven sages of Buddhism, namely the twenty-seven saints of the four stages and four fruits, namely the eighteen learners of the first four stages and three fruits, and the nine non-learners of the later Arhat fruit.

Thirty-six

To make it easier to carry, divide the one hundred and eight beads into three, which is a simplified version of one hundred and eight beads. The meaning is the same, it is mainly for the convenience of people to carry around, and it also conveys the mysterious philosophy of seeing the big picture from the small and simplifying the complex.

Forty-two

It represents the 42 stages of the Bodhisattva's practice process, the "Ten Dwellings", "Ten Practices", "Ten Grounds", "Ten Dedications" plus the two beads of "Equal Enlightenment" and "Miaojue", making a total of 42 beads.

Fifty-four

It represents the fifty-four stages in the Bodhisattva's practice, namely the "Ten Faiths", "Ten Dwellings", "Ten Practices", "Ten Stages", "Ten Dedications" and "Four Good Roots", making up a total of fifty-four beads.

One hundred and eight

It means seeking the 108 Samadhis and eliminating 108 kinds of afflictions. Seek peace of mind and body, and adopt a desireless and non-demanding attitude. 108 is the sum of the numbers of Tiangang and Disha in Taoist culture, and wearing it also means protection.
