History of Jade Processing

Due to the different levels of productivity development in different historical periods, which are directly reflected in the processing technology of jade wares, the jade wares of each period also have significant differences. Before the Shang Dynasty, jade processing techniques mostly used the method of rubbing with hard objects, which made the surface of jade very smooth and almost invisible to tiny flaws. The disadvantage was that the process was relatively slow. Jade processing in the Neolithic Age largely followed previous processing methods, but the craftsmanship was slightly rough, so there were many defects of varying degrees on the surface.

Jadeite processing

By observing the color, quality, cracks, and flaws of jadeite, we can analyze how to design and make jadeite, which is what we call "jade judging". After deciding how to design and produce it, the large piece of jade may be cut, which is called cutting.

After cutting the material, there is a processing process for a specific shape, which is called "shaping". If there are no defects, floating fibers, cracks, etc., generally no shaping is required. The next step is to design. After cutting off unnecessary jade materials, use the jade materials to design a prototype of the work that conforms to the shape characteristics of the jade materials themselves.

After carving and polishing, it has basically taken shape. Although jade carving methods are universal, the polishing methods are indeed tailor-made. Manual polishing is time-consuming and labor-intensive, but it can bring out the details of the jadeite to the fullest, which is also valuable.

Of course, polishing is not the last step in jade processing. The jade also needs to be cleaned and sealed with wax. After all, no matter how high the polishing skills are, there will always be uneven gloss, and the visual effect is not good. After cleaning and sealing with wax, the jade is greatly improved in terms of gloss and appearance.
