Steps of Jade Carving

Jade carving is the process of transforming a piece of jade from a raw stone into a work of art, and is also one of the important factors that determine the market value of jade finished products. Generally speaking, the production process of jade carvings is roughly carried out through the steps of examining the jade - setting the shape - controlling the shape - conveying the spirit. Let us now take a closer look at these six steps of jade carving.

Step one: Material selection: Material selection is the first step in designing a sculpture. The quality of the material determines the subject matter and the refinement of the work. The jade material must be high-quality and the carving must be done with great care.

Step 2: Design: Carefully examine the selected materials, understand the jade thoroughly, and remove the dirt and avoid the knots. The most important thing in the design of jade works is color preservation, which determines the value of the work.

Step 3: Carving: First use diamond powder to cut the jade except the ink line, and use the stone to stick and rub out the general outline. Use rolling mill and nails to adjust the appearance until you are satisfied. This is the first step in carving: “forming the general shape”.

Step 4: Redesign: Grind off the excess waste jade, remove the cracks, and basically determine the general shape. Since the ink lines drawn during the design process are ground off during the carving process, the jade needs to be re-examined and redesigned.

Step 5: Carve again: Carve and draw, then carve again and draw again. The work will have a more three-dimensional feel through continuous carving.

Step 6: Fine carving: adjust the large parts and determine the details. At this time, you should concentrate on smoothing the work while correcting the details. This will end when there is no excess jade meat. The finished carved work does not have the crystal and round feeling of jade, so the next step is grinding and polishing.

In short, for a piece of jade to be transformed from a raw stone into a work of art, it requires the careful carving of a jade carver. Each piece of jade art is the result of the painstaking efforts of the jade carver and deserves the respect of every one of us.
