There are three common jade carving techniques, which one is your favorite?

As the saying goes: "If jade is not carved, it will not become a useful object." When we buy jade, we generally pay attention to four points: type, water, color, and the fourth point is workmanship! The saying goes "30% material, 70% workmanship". For example, the colorful jadeite we talked about yesterday is the embodiment of craftsmanship, which also shows the importance of craftsmanship. So what are the common jade carving techniques? Without further ado, let’s get started!

Round Sculpture

A round sculpture is also called a three-dimensional sculpture, which refers to a three-dimensional sculpture that can be appreciated from multiple directions and angles. Because round sculptures are very three-dimensional, the sculptor is required to carve from front to back, from left to right, and from top to bottom, which is a great test of the sculptor's craftsmanship.

Not only that, the requirements for material selection for round sculpture are also very strict. Generally speaking, the content of round sculptures is figures and animals, and round sculptures are not very suitable for carving natural scenes. At the same time, round sculpture is an art form that can best demonstrate the designer's level, and it fully reflects the designer's attitude and interpretation of the material.

Relief

Relief is not three-dimensional, but more like a painting. It refers to the carving work on a flat base . Relief is relatively free and not too restricted by form. Generally speaking, relief refers to compressing the thickness of jade to express the artistic image of jadeite by maintaining the original length and width ratio.

Unlike round sculptures, relief works cannot be appreciated from all angles and are generally viewed from the front. According to the different degrees of compression of space, relief can also be divided into shallow relief, medium relief and deep relief. Each of the three has its own advantages , among which medium relief is the most widely used carving method.

Hollow carving

Openwork carving is a form of sculpture. That is, on the basis of the relief, the background part is hollowed out. Some are single-sided carvings, and some are double-sided carvings. Openwork carving is also called hollowing out and openwork carving. Refers to a technique of carving various patterns and designs on wood, stone, ivory, jade, ceramics and other materials that can be used for carving.

Hollow carving has a very early origin and was discovered in the Neolithic Age. By the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it had become popular and was deeply loved by people. Hollow carving is very difficult. It hollows out various parts of the jade so that the carved patterns run through and connect with each other. It not only enhances the three-dimensionality of the jade carving, but also makes the work more layered.

In our country, jade carving has a very long history, and China's jade carving technology is well-known. Jade is an important carrier of jade carving, and there are many carving techniques. These three are just common carving techniques. Therefore, when purchasing jade, we should not ignore the brilliance of our traditional Chinese craftsmanship!
