What exactly is dry green jadeite? Is it considered jadeite?

As the saying goes, jade is most valuable when it is green, but because jade that is fully green is usually quite expensive, many people are reluctant to buy it. However, there is a kind of "jade" on the market called Ganqing. Because of its high green concentration and relatively cheap price, it is deeply loved by ordinary consumers. So, what exactly is this Ganqing jade? Is it really jade?

In fact, the so-called dry green jade is an opaque jade with rich green as the main color on the market. The biggest feature of this jade, in addition to its full green color, is that it has no dry feeling at all, which is the main reason why it is called dry green.

Generally speaking, jadeite is a fibrous aggregate composed of pyroxene minerals, mainly jadeite minerals. It is a type of jade that is translucent to opaque or rarely transparent. Jade is mainly composed of jadeite or jadeite and sodium and sodium-calcium pyroxene. It may contain amphibole, feldspar, chromite, etc. Common varieties include old pit jade, ice jade, water jade and other varieties.

In the general sense, the sodium chrome pyroxene content of jade is roughly a dozen percent, while the dry green variety is a sodium chrome pyroxene rock mainly composed of sodium chrome pyroxene. It is also a type of jadeite rock, but the jadeite content it contains is very low. In other words, Ganqing is a kind of jadeite jadeite rock with a chromium ion content far higher than that of ordinary jadeite or even Tielongsheng jadeite.

The presence of chromium ions in jadeite jadeite rocks is the fundamental reason why jadeite produces its green color. As the chromium ion content increases, the green color of jadeite becomes richer and brighter, thereby producing Tielongsheng jadeite, which is slightly better than ordinary jadeite. However, when the chromium ion content reaches a certain level, jadeite will evolve into sodium chrome pyroxene, also known as dry green. At this time, dry green is no longer jade in the traditional sense.

Although academically, Ganqing cannot be called jadeite because of its low jadeite content. However, because Ganqing is full green all over, and the color is positive and not evil, giving people a rich green and pleasing feeling, it is still very popular in the market. In order to cater to the public psychology, merchants call it jadeite, so Ganqing jadeite is just a commercial name.

In addition, from the overall point of view, dry green jadeite belongs to the medium and low-grade jadeite. Therefore, the price of dry green jadeite is not high, generally ranging from several hundred to several thousand. The main reasons for this are: first, its quality is poor; second, its carving craftsmanship is relatively rough. However, there are a few top-quality dry green jadeite from the old pit variety, which are very beautiful with bright colors, very few impurities, and relatively good gloss. The only thing is that they do not have the quality of jadeite. The price of this type of jadeite will be slightly higher, generally in the upper-middle price range.

In addition to price, there is something else to note. Because of its rich color and low transparency, dry green jadeite is often made into ornaments. Jewelry made of dry green jadeite is often made very thin to reduce the overly dark green color, but this also increases the possibility of breakage due to being too thin. Therefore, quite a lot of dry green jadeite uses the 18K gold substrate process, the purpose of which is to protect the thinner dry green jadeite from breaking.
