Isn’t jadeite jade? What is the difference between jadeite and jade?

Jadeite is a type of jade, but jade includes a wider range of types, so jadeite is just one of the types of jade. Among them, jadeite refers to an aggregate mainly composed of jadeite, the main component of which is sodium aluminum silicate, the main mineral is jadeite, and green is the most valuable color. Jade refers to beautiful stones, including jadeite, Hetian jade, etc. In the traditional sense, jade is nephrite, the most representative of which is Hetian jade. The main component is sodium magnesium silicate, and the main minerals are tremolite, actinolite, etc. But jade is generally divided into two types, one is hard jade and the other is soft jade.

Jadeite usually refers to jadeite, while nephrite mostly refers to Hetian jade. Among them, nephrite is a traditional Chinese jade material. The name of jade comes from nephrite. Because the jade production in the Hotan area of Xinjiang is better, people often call nephrite "Hotan jade". The hardness of nephrite is generally 5.6-6.5 degrees. It is opaque or translucent. It is divided into the following categories according to color: white jade, yellow jade, green jade, jasper, black jade, flower jade and jadeite. Jadeite refers to jadeite produced in Myanmar. Whether it is nephrite or jadeite, their texture is very hard and the color is very bright, so they are known as the "king of stones".

Among them, jadeite, also known as jadeite jade, jadeite, and Burmese jade, is a type of jade. The correct definition of jadeite is a fibrous aggregate composed of pyroxene minerals, mainly jadeite minerals. But jadeite is not the same as jadeite. Jade is a stone polycrystalline aggregate that reaches the jade grade under geological action. It is mainly composed of jadeite or jadeite and sodium sodium chrome pyroxene and sodium calcium pyroxene omphacite. Jade is also a kind of stone. It is fine, hard, lustrous, slightly transparent, and can be carved into handicrafts. In a broad sense, jade includes gems such as diamonds, agate, crystal, amber, turquoise, coral, and pearls. But in a narrow sense, jade usually refers to nephrite, also known as Hetian jade.

Secondly, Hetian jade is a metamorphic rock formed by the contact and replacement of magnesian marble and intermediate-acidic igneous rock. It contains a multi-mineral aggregate such as tremolite, hornblende, actinolite, etc., and its chemical composition is hydrated calcium magnesium silicate. The definitions of jadeite and jade are different, because jadeite refers to a fibrous aggregate of various tiny mineral particles mainly jadeite, but jade refers to all beautiful stones, including jadeite, Hetian jade, Dushan jade, agate and other varieties. In addition, the mineral composition is also different. The main component of jade is sodium aluminum silicate, and the main mineral is jadeite. Jade in the traditional sense refers to nephrite, whose main component is sodium magnesium silicate, and its main minerals are tremolite, actinolite, etc.

In addition, there are differences in color between jadeite and jade. Jadeite comes in many colors, including green, yellow, black, purple, etc., but green is the best overall. In the traditional sense, the most representative nephrite is Hetian jade, which also has rich colors, including white, cyan, gray, light to dark green, yellow to brown, ink color, etc. But white is the best overall. Secondly, except for Xinjiang, China, there are more than 120 tremolite jade deposits in the world, distributed in more than 20 countries and regions: Russia, the United States, Brazil, Canada, Australia, Poland, New Zealand, South Korea, North Korea, Taiwan, etc. Among them, Canada's production ranks second in the world. These deposits are all serpentinite-type tremolite jades, mainly jasper. Russia, South Korea and North Korea produce white jade. Only the Hetian jade from Xinjiang is a non-serpentinite-type tremolite jade due to its special geological origin.

On the contrary, jadeite has very few origins, only a few countries such as the United States, Japan, Russia, Guatemala, Myanmar, China, etc., and Myanmar is the country with the highest output and the best quality, so jadeite is also called Burmese jade. Except for the high-quality jade produced in Myanmar, the jade produced in other countries is mostly carving-grade craft materials and cannot reach the gem grade like Burmese jade. Therefore, Burmese jade is generally more expensive in the market, while the price of jade produced in other countries is often lower than that of jade produced in Burma.
