The three major jadeite counterfeits that can fool detection are very powerful. If you are not careful, you will easily suffer losses.

The three major jadeite counterfeits that can fool detection are very powerful. If you are not careful, you will easily suffer losses.

1. Back inlay, which means using inlays to completely seal the bottom of the jade, so that you can't see the inside of the jade. In fact, back inlay is also a normal processing technology, because back sealing can make the jade more firmly embedded in the base, which is safer. At the same time, back sealing can make the jade more watery, and the closed design can reduce the entry of stains.

However, the backing inlay also has a very serious problem: if it is a type that cannot open a window, you cannot intuitively understand the specific situation of the jade, which also leads to the backing jade being prone to two situations:

1. The jadeite has major flaws, but they can’t be seen from the front. So the back is covered to hide the flaws, and the jadeite is sold at a high price.

2. The jade used for inlay is "eggshell" (that is, extremely thin jadeite slices or even Yongchu materials). The water quality of these materials is not good, and they are deliberately thinned to the limit to show the water quality and color. Because the thickness cannot be seen from the backing, they are sold as inlaid jadeite of normal thickness. This "eggshell" jade itself is not valuable, and there is also the risk of breaking.

The concept of simple work

two

The so-called "yin and yang" means that on the same piece of material, half is natural high-quality material, and the other half is of extremely poor quality. In order to sell it at a high price, unscrupulous businessmen dye and inject glue into the poor quality half, thus obtaining a piece of jade that looks perfect and high-quality.

Although the "yin-yang" jade contains good natural materials, it will be damaged if it is processed. Once it is processed, it will lose its collection value as natural jade.

What is infuriating is that when you send jadeite that has been counterfeited with the "yin-yang side" method for inspection, if you only roughly inspect a small part of the jadeite, and this point happens to be on the side of the natural material, you will get a certificate for natural jadeite. Even sending it for inspection is in vain, but this jade is not natural after all, and some people may be kept in the dark.

If you look closely, you will find that the color and gloss of the fake joints will have an unnatural transition, and the gloss will become weaker and darker in the places where glue is filled, appearing foggy. Although the processed jade appears to be transparent, a closer look reveals that the internal structure lines are very loose and floating, appearing like a net or ditches. It is recommended that you send it to professional quality inspection agencies such as provincial inspection and national inspection, and the results obtained will be much more reliable.

How to identify Yin-Yang jadeite? Most "yin-yang" jadeite has been filled with color and glue. Upon careful observation, the color and gloss of the fake joints will have an unnatural transition. The gloss will become weaker and darker in the places where glue has been filled, appearing foggy.

After being corroded by chemicals, tiny pits will appear on the surface of the jade, which can sometimes be felt by touching it with your hands. Although the processed jade appears to be transparent, a closer look reveals that the internal structure is very loose, appearing in a net or ditch shape.

Using other minerals to impersonate jade

three

01. Guatemala’s “Emerald”

Guatemalan jadeite may be relatively unfamiliar to everyone. It is a new jade variety discovered in Guatemala. Its characteristics and appearance are very similar to jadeite, so it is called Guatemalan jadeite.

The characteristics of Guatemalan jade are: refractive index of 1.68, density of 3.32, and the fiber interweaving structure is also very similar to jade, so many appraisal agencies also issue certificates for A-grade jade. But in fact, the quality of Guatemalan jade is much worse than that of Burmese jade. Its material is very thin and very easy to break. It is recommended that you do not buy it.

① Look at the color: Although Guatemalan jade is high green, it often has many black spots and the color will be a bit dark, but the green of natural jade is very positive.

② Look at the thickness: The material of Guatemalan jade is very thin, so some unscrupulous merchants will hollow out the back to enhance the green color of the jade. Because if the Guatemalan jade is too dark, the jade will turn black. Guatemalan jade is usually used for decoration and inlay.

02. Water foam

Because water jade is crystal clear, it is often used to impersonate ice jade and sold at sky-high prices. In addition, merchants also use water bubbles with floating blue flowers to impersonate floating blue flower jadeite. The water bubbles with good appearance and water content are very similar to high-end jadeite.

The density of water foam is low, and it feels very light in the hand, without the heaviness of jadeite. The floating flowers on jadeite are clean and natural, like a smudged ink painting, while the floating flowers on water foam seem to be floating on the periphery, which is unnatural and rather rough.

03. Ice Jade

Ice jade only became popular in the past two years. It has nothing to do with jadeite; it is purely glass! Ice jade is impersonated by green glass products. It looks somewhat similar to the top-grade full green glass jade, so some unscrupulous merchants use ice jade to make profits under the name of jade.

① Physical characteristics: The properties of "Ice Jade" and "Glassware" are similar, with a hardness of 6, a relative density of 2.4-2.5, and a refractive index of 1.5, which are very different from jadeite.

② Observe the inside: Many glass products have some small bubbles inside, but jade does not.

③ Look at the jadeite quality: Glass definitely does not have jadeite quality, so as long as no reflection is observed on the surface of jadeite, it is definitely not jadeite, but it does not mean it is ice jadeite.

The level of jade counterfeiting is getting higher and higher now. Unless you have profound skills, it is difficult to see all the tricks. When purchasing jadeite, it is best to go to a reputable store or a reputable online mall, and please look for authoritative appraisal certificates!
