Glass jade and ice jade, which one would you buy?

If jade is classified according to its quality, it can be mainly divided into glass type, ice type, glutinous type and bean type. We all know that glass type and ice type of jade are the most valuable, and more people like these two types of jade.

We have always emphasized the importance of jade quality, and glass-type jade has the best quality among all jades. Glass jade is transparent and clear, which is hard to come by. This kind of jade has a glassy luster, fine and pure texture, no flaws, and pure color. It is the best or the best quality jade. After the glass type, the ice type is the next best. The so-called ice type is like crystal clear ice.

Because ice type and glass type are very similar, many people cannot tell the difference between the two, so merchants often use ice type to impersonate glass type and raise the price.

1. Look at the appearance

Glass jade: As the name suggests, jade is as transparent as glass and its appearance has a high ornamental value. It has a delicate internal structure, strong toughness and is mostly colorless.

Ice jade: Like ice cubes, it is relatively translucent, and the outer surface is as clear as ice, giving people a feeling of purity and cleanliness.

2. Look at the particles

Glass-type jadeite: The crystallized mineral particles are very fine and uniform, the granularity cannot be observed with the naked eye, the density between the crystals is quite good, and it is a cryptocrystalline crystal.

Ice jade: The crystal grains are slightly coarser than those of glass jade, and there is a faint granular feeling when observed with the naked eye.

3. Look at transparency

Because of its good water quality, glass jadeite of the same thickness will be much more transparent than ice jadeite.

Glass-type jadeite: When placed on paper, you can see the text underneath through the jade flesh, and the cotton spots or impurities inside are clearly visible.

Ice Jadeite: Only the outline of words can be seen through the jade flesh. The words are recognizable, but there is a blurriness. The white cotton inside has low visibility and is looming.

4. Check for fluorescence and its intensity

Glass-type jadeite: Jadeite with excellent quality can fluoresce, and the fluorescence is usually strong and lustrous, but there are a few glass-type jadeite whose fluorescence is relatively weak or even has no fluorescence effect. The glass variety that fluoresces is called dragon variety, which is the best germplasm.

Ice jade: It also fluoresces, but the fluorescence is usually weak or there is no fluorescence.

It should be noted that most glass-type jadeite will fluoresce, but not all jadeite that fluoresces is glass-type jadeite. Many processors will artificially create the fluorescent effect, which they call "water adjustment", in order to obtain high profits. In fact, this is misleading jade lovers. The basic method of "water adjustment" is to dig a groove or pit on the back of the finished product, which is a waste of natural resources. Therefore, everyone must improve their ability to resolve.

5. Check if there is white cotton

Glass jade: The interior is clean and pure like glass. If there is cotton, it is called cotton spots, or a small amount of floating cotton, which is clearly visible. The cotton spots often become the highlight of the jade carver's creation.

Ice jade: There is usually obvious white cotton inside, like ice chips, and the white cotton is clearly distinguished from the bottom.

Generally speaking, the ice type is slightly less transparent than the glass type. The ice type can form water head, and the glass type can form fluorescence. They each have their own advantages.

Because of their fine texture and high transparency, glass-type and ice-type jadeite are generally carved using the simplest shallow relief technique, and the carved decorations and designs are also simplified as much as possible.
