Why has the jadeite pendant, which has no technical content at all, become a regular at major jewelry auctions?

The Wu Shi Pai is a very classic jade theme and can be seen everywhere in major jade markets.

Its characteristic is that “there is not a single pattern on the surface” and it seems to have no technical content, but it has become a frequent visitor to major jewelry auctions and has repeatedly been sold at sky-high prices!

Why is this? The Wu Shi Pai can be traced back to the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty, and was made by the jade carving master Lu Zigang.

It is said that at that time Master Lu Zigang was preparing a farewell gift for his friend, but even though he had thousands of thoughts, he was unable to express them in words. No matter how superb my skills are, I think they cannot express my best wishes to my friends.

Just when Lu Zigang was at a loss, he suddenly had an idea and thought of the saying "Existence is non-existence, and non-existence is existence."

Instead of worrying about complicated composition, it is better to leave it completely blank without any patterns or decorations, retaining the smoothest and most original side, and taking the homonym of "无饰(无事)", which implies peace and tranquility without worries.

Later, Wu Shi Pai became widely circulated and was highly sought after by people of all dynasties.

No matter it is a scholar on the road to take an imperial examination, or a businessman on a trip, they will choose to wear a Wu Shi Pai as a talisman to bless a safe and smooth journey ahead!

Until now, the Wu Shi Pai is still a classic jade carving theme that is equally popular among friends.

The earliest raw material for making Wu Shi Pai was mainly jade, and later it gradually evolved into metal, wood, gemstone and other types of Wu Shi Pai.

During the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China period when jade was regarded as a fashion trend, Wu Shi Pai made of jade as the raw material appeared. They have been passed down to this day and their market value is generally high!

Because jadeite that can be made into a Wu Shi Pai often has to meet the following three conditions!

1. Fine texture

If jadeite with a rough texture is made into a Wu Shi Pai, not only will there be irregularly distributed bean-like particles visible to the naked eye on the surface, but it will also be mixed with some black or gray impurities, giving a very poor effect.

It looks almost like marble, not to mention being worn as a talisman!

Therefore, the jadeite that can be made into Wu Shi Pai is generally of the glutinous grade or above. The better the texture and the higher the transparency, the more expensive it will be!

No. 2: No cracks

Since the Wu Shi Pai has the characteristic of "no decoration", the jade carver's room for maneuver in avoiding cracks is limited.

If a piece of Wu Shi board has a few cracks exposed on it, anyone who sees it will probably feel uncomfortable.

Therefore, when jade craftsmen select materials for making jade pendants, they will avoid materials with obvious cracks.

No. 3: Less impurities

The principle is similar to the second point, both of which are to ensure the beauty of the Wu Shi Pai to the greatest extent!

The cleaner the inside of the jade is, the higher the final value of the jadeite will be!

However, there are very few jade materials that can meet the above three points.

Therefore, for some extremely rare materials, the first thing they will be considered is making into plain-surface jadeite such as bracelets, egg-shaped jadeite, and jadeite plaques.

It is not difficult to understand why Wu Shi Pai has become a regular at major jewelry auctions!
