In the development history of the jade industry, in order to distinguish the high quality of jade, to describe a certain type or even a piece of jade, and to show the difference between this type or this piece of jade and other jade, specific jade is often positioned as a variety, called the species of jade. Species of jade are often named after their origin type, color characteristics, transparency characteristics, structural characteristics, value, owner place name and discovery time, which is essentially a combination of specific quality elements. Therefore, the type of jade can also be regarded as a synonym for the quality of jade. The classification of some jade species reflects the common characteristics and qualities of a type of jade. And it has been spread and applied in the industry. Therefore, the type of jade can indicate the high quality of jade and is an important symbol for evaluating jade. There is a saying that "laymen look at the color, experts look at the type". Generally speaking, jadeite can be divided into the following types. 1. Bean seeds Bean-type jade refers to jade with coarse crystal grains. If they are larger than 1mm, they can be easily observed by the naked eye. Most of the coarse grains are short columnar. When the boundaries of these short columnar grains are very clear, they look like green beans, so they are called bean-type (a very vivid name). Because of its coarse grains and generally poor transparency, it is called very dry by experts. Bean-type jade is one of the most common jade varieties. 2. Horse tooth Horse-tooth jade has a fine texture but is opaque, like porcelain. The mineral crystal grains are coarse and the crystal outlines can be discerned with the naked eye. The horse-tooth jade has a white to grayish white base with green distributed on it. It looks good at first glance, but the green may be mixed with light green, brown and other tones. It has color but no quality. If you look closely, you can see very thin white stripes in the green, and sometimes clumps of white cotton. Although horse-tooth jade has a certain color, it is not very valuable because it is not transparent enough, or in the jargon, it is called poor water content or short water head. 3. Violet Violet jade is a kind of purple jade. The purple color is generally lighter, showing an elegant nobility, like the purple of violet flowers, hence the name. According to the difference in its color tone, it can generally be divided into pink purple, eggplant purple and blue purple. The pink purple has a finer texture and higher transparency, which is rare; eggplant purple is second. 4. Dry green Ganqing jade is a kind of jade that is dark green to dark green (but black) in color, with black spots, often with cracks, poor transparency, appears very dry, and has coarse grains. The main mineral component of this jade is sodium chrome pyroxene, so it is also called sodium chrome pyroxene jade. Due to its high Cr content, the color is brighter. 5. Red Jadeite Red jadeite specifically refers to jadeite with bright red or orange-red color. Its color is caused by the contamination of hematite after the formation of English crystals. This type of jadeite generally has coarser grains and poorer transparency. However, red jadeite often has bright color, fine texture and good transparency. Such red jadeite has higher value. 6. Yellow-brown jadeite Yellow-brown jadeite specifically refers to jadeite whose color ranges from yellow to brown-yellow or brown-yellow. Its color is caused by the contamination of limonite after the formation of jadeite crystals. It is usually more transparent than red jadeite. In most cases, the value of red jadeite is higher than that of yellow jadeite, which is higher than brown-yellow jadeite, and brown-yellow jadeite is the next most valuable. There are also cases where the value of an ornament is different from the norm due to people's preferences or the uniqueness of the ornament. 7. Black Jade The main constituent minerals are sodium chrome pyroxene, which has a dark green, almost black appearance, but when observed under transmitted light, it is mostly translucent, with green showing through the black. 8. Tielongsheng Tielongsheng (also known as Tianlongsheng) is a transliteration of the Burmese name for this type of jade, meaning full green. Specifically refers to jadeite that is bright green but with varying shades, poor transparency, rough texture, loose structure, and columnar crystals arranged in a certain direction. The reason why the color is bright and full green is directly related to its high content of color-causing ions. "Tielongsheng" is used to make thin leaves, thin butterflies and other ornaments with good effects. It is also used to make carved beads, carved bracelets and other full green jade items. Because of the rich green of "Tielongsheng", the ornaments made of its slices have high ornamental and practical value. 9. The Fu Lu Shou variety refers specifically to a piece of jade that has green, red and purple colors at the same time, which is called the Fu Lu Shou variety. This kind of jade is considered to be a very auspicious symbol, representing the three joys of happiness, wealth and longevity, and is a more valuable variety of jade.
