Talk about the flaws of jade

As a kind of jewelry, jade is loved by everyone for its value and beauty. Anyone who knows about jade knows that flawless jade is rare. Every piece of jade has its flaws, which is what everyone calls the "beauty of imperfections." When talking about the beauty of imperfections, many people will think of the "Venus" sculpture with broken arms. Since everyone loves Venus so much, we should not blindly pursue perfection in jade.

If you want to find a good-looking piece of jadeite of equal value, you need to understand where jadeite comes from and what kind of jadeite can be considered a good product. Generally speaking, a piece of jade is rarely green all over. Except for the "green" part, the other colors are called "ground". The colors of "ground" include white, yellow, black, blue, purple, lake green, etc. Many people believe that high-quality jade should be impeccable in five aspects, namely "type, water, color, workmanship, and perfection". Unfortunately, even a white jade has slight flaws. It is difficult for natural Burmese jade to reach the level of perfection, especially the varieties circulating on the market, which have more or less some flaws. Common defects include cracks and fissures, while miscellaneous veins, stone patterns, stone flowers (referring to the floc-like white precipitates in jade), colors, dirty spots, etc., if they reach the level of affecting the overall effect of jade, they are also considered defects. Most jade players said that the main reasons for cracks are that the raw stone is hit during transportation, the sheet material is damaged during processing, or the finished product is dropped on the ground. In addition to obvious cracks, most cracks are transverse cracks, which can be seen with the naked eye. "Cracks" refer to the fractures of jadeite caused by external stress during the long-term formation process in a complex geological environment. They are generally congenital (original) and are mostly internal vertical cracks that cannot be scratched by fingernails.

Many people buy jade but don’t know how to distinguish it. Therefore, some people in the industry have proposed using four indicators: color, transparency, precision and beauty to measure the value of finished jade accessories.

As we all know, green is the best quality jade, followed by purple and red. Generally, jade raw materials with good transparency are relatively scarce. Water, type and bottom can be generally summarized as transparency (water refers to transparency, type refers to structure, bottom refers to cracks and impurities). As the saying goes, "If jade is not carved, it will not be made into a useful object." The workmanship and material are equally important. Anything that is carefully crafted with delicate workmanship, well-rounded curves, and a smooth feel must be a good thing. The so-called "beauty and harmony" refers to the accessories having harmonious proportions, reasonable structure, clear theme and auspicious meaning. China's jade carvings are world-renowned for the "rough elegance" of court craftsmanship, the "heavy and majestic" of Yangzhou craftsmanship, the "elegant and graceful" of southern Guangdong craftsmanship, the "refined and exquisite" of Suzhou craftsmanship, and the "delicate and innovative" of Shanghai-style craftsmanship represented by Shanghai. They have always been a popular collection object among investors.

Industry players recommend that everyone follow the principles of "round, thick, and pure" when choosing jade jewelry. "Regular" means the appearance should be regular; "thick" refers to the amount of material used, and is also related to the shape. Jade jewelry that looks thick and full is good, while thin ones are second best; "pure" refers to the color. It is better if the color is pure and uniform without deviation.
