There are many kinds of carved pieces, ranging from small pendants and jade plaques to medium-sized hand-held playthings, to large ornaments and screens placed on tables and cabinets, and even large ornaments half a person's height. The reason for carving is because there are cracks and impurities, and the defects are removed through carving.

1. Evaluation of overall appearance. This is the intuition at first sight, which is what people call eye connection or jade connection. Evaluation details such as the asymmetry of the sculpture, the expression of the character's eyes, the body proportions (whether too fat or too thin), whether the curvature of the Maitreya Buddha's belly is in place, whether the shape is complete or crooked or missing corners, whether the bottom is flat or crooked, whether the animal shape is vivid and three-dimensional, whether the proportions are appropriate, etc., are both subjective and objective.

2. Evaluation of design creativity. Break through traditional topics, give people a refreshing experience, and create subjects that are eye-catching and astonishing. The content can be abstract or figurative. If it is an ordinary creativity, it can only achieve a good evaluation, but "Returning Home on a Snowy Night" can achieve an excellent evaluation.

3. Color layout evaluation. This is to evaluate the aesthetic skills of the jade carver. The color of jade is changing all the time, and the jade carver must adapt according to the color, pursue the best color, and place it in the correct and appropriate position. In addition, if you can skillfully turn dirty colors into indispensable colors for the background, you will be a genius. For example, he uses unwanted waste materials, such as black spots and white cotton, to create falling snowflakes. How can he not be praised highly? If there is only one color, no evaluation will be made.

4. Processing technology evaluation, etc. This is divided into basic skills and unique skills. The general level of craftsmanship is at the good to very good stage, with master-level workmanship reaching the excellent stage. In the first three years of apprenticeship, apprentices only reach the good or ordinary stage. To put it simply, it needs to be curved enough, thin enough, long enough, thin enough, and have a flat bottom. Whether the lines are uniform in size, whether the arc is smooth, whether there are any broken lines, whether the animal's eyes are sharp, whether the small sharp thorns on the mantis's feet are clearly visible, the thickness of the butterfly's wings and antennae, whether the inner wall of the vase can be as thin as paper, whether the chain links are uniform in size, whether the polishing is fine and in place, and whether the workmanship is done according to the materials. The evaluation content is rated on four levels: excellent, very good, good, and average.
