Jade culture knowledge: Teach you to understand the secret of jade "fluorescence"

Jade culture knowledge: Teach you to understand the secret of jade "fluorescence"

Jade is a polycrystalline interwoven structure. Simply put, it is a collection of countless translucent mirrors with their own reflective properties. There is reflection between the "mirrors", and there is also mutual reflection. These optical reactions constitute the gloss of jade that jade lovers often talk about.

Generally speaking, for a jade product with a thickness of about one centimeter and a round shape, when it shows visual effects of fluorescent light, oily light, rigid light, glass light, waxy light, and stone light, it can correspondingly represent the quality, type and transparency of its jade crystal.

First, let’s take a look at jade’s best lighting performance. Their light performance, in jargon, is usually called fluorescent light, oily light and rigid light, followed by glass light, then waxy light, and finally stone light.

1. Fluorescence

Fluorescence is a type of follower light that produces a corresponding reflection angle based on changes in the observation angle. Jade with a fluorescent feeling can give people a feeling that it is brighter than its surroundings at any angle.

The luminescence of highly transparent jade can be seen even in natural light. For jadeite with low transparency, the fluorescence can only be reflected through a strong artificial light source, such as a flashlight.

In fact, theoretically speaking, jadeite of the glutinous variety and above may exhibit the fluorescence phenomenon, and the closer the shape of the jadeite is to a perfect circle, the more obvious the fluorescence effect will be. This is also one of the reasons why carvers try to make spherical objects and figures as round as possible in finished jade products.

2. Oily light

Oily luster means that visually, we can see that the jade looks like it has been brushed with oil. This requires that the jade crystals should be quite fine. When light enters jade, the same beam of light is decomposed into many rays of uniform size that gradually diffuse. They are evenly distributed on the surface of jade crystals, ensuring the transparency of the jade while also reflecting the shape of the light when it shines on a single crystal.

3. Rigid light

Rigid light represents the extraordinary transparency and reflective ability of jade crystals. Generally speaking, we often hear the sayings "full of hardness, having a sense of toughness, and having a strong texture" in the jade market, which refers to this ability. Jade crystal is translucent, and it is absolutely impossible to expect its reflective ability to be the same as a mirror. So, relatively speaking, the intensity of reflected light determines its transparency quality. Jade with strong rigid light can appear to have a glowing effect under natural light.

As for the waxy luster and stone luster, they both appear on inferior jadeite. Among them, the main problem with waxy luster is that the crystals are loose, the quality is tender, and the light transmission effect is poor. No matter how good the water head of jade is, it will feel loose. Stone luster, as the name suggests, is the lack of gloss like stone. It’s not that it cannot be polished, it’s just that jade with this kind of glossiness, after polishing, is difficult to have a sense of transparency and looks like a piece of stone.

The above is an introduction to the luster of jadeite. Once you have mastered the secret of jadeite’s “light”, I believe you will have your own basic judgment when purchasing jadeite.
