Wasn’t jadeite called jadeite before?

I believe that everyone is very familiar with jade today, and it is basically a household name.

But do you know? Jadeite was not called jadeite before.

In everyone's impression, jade is mostly green. Myanmar, where jade is produced, is adjacent to Yunnan in my country, so everyone generally believes that jade comes from Yunnan. Therefore, jade has also been called Dian jade, Yun jade, etc.

In 1888, an expedition team that arrived in Burma's jade mining area included a British consultant named William Varley.

He believes that before 1784, Chinese merchants traveling along the ancient southern Silk Road simply picked up beautiful jade gravel by chance.

A few years later, Chinese businessmen discovered a riverbed of jadeite raw stones in Myanmar.

People name jade according to its characteristics, properties and origin, such as Burmese jade, Yunnan jade, jadeite, purple jade, etc.

In other words, people at that time generally named jade according to its color and the area where it was excavated.

Later, people discovered that the jade from Myanmar was very colorful, very similar to the red-feathered jade bird and the green-feathered kingfisher. Therefore, people called this colorful jade resource in Yunnan and Myanmar jadeite.

People used to call the red one "Fei" and the green one "Cui".

About 100 years ago, Chinese geologist Zhang Hongzhao and others officially called the jade from Myanmar "jadeite" in documents such as "Shi Ya".

The name jadeite was gradually accepted by people and began to spread in Southeast Asia and other regions.

Some people once thought that jadeite was a stone, while others thought that jadeite was jade. Therefore, the Chinese people have debated for a long time about the naming of jadeite.

Looking at the timeline, people first thought that jadeite was a kind of stone, and later acknowledged that it was a type of jade.

After hundreds of years of screening, people finally chose the word "jade" from many previously used names.

Jadeite embodies the main characteristics of this jade and also reflects people's vision of beauty and perfection.

As a type of jade, jadeite has begun to be endowed with many auspicious cultural connotations, and the domestic jadeite market is becoming increasingly hot.

Today, jadeite is becoming more and more popular in the jade market and has become the well-deserved "King of Jade".
