Cotton is an impurity in jade and a defect of jade. It refers to the "flocs" inside jade. When the transparent or translucent jade is illuminated by light or bottom light, some cotton-like substances appear inside the jade. They are mostly translucent or slightly transparent white minerals in the form of patches, strips, filaments, or ripples. There are many types of "cotton" in jade, but snowflake cotton is the most unique one among all the cotton in jade. It is "cluster-shaped cotton" that is white and light in color. It floats in the jade and blends with the base, becoming a part of the jade, which is generous and well-organized in density.

The cotton in jade is mostly caused by the reflection of light between the grain spaces, cracks and impurity inclusions of jadeite minerals in jade, which is also called "intergranular optical effect". There is also an explanation that the cotton between the green color of jadeite may be caused by the uneven distribution of green color in the jadeite itself. Even if it is a defect, the formation of cotton is a very difficult process, not to mention the formation of snowflake cotton that is crystal clear, snow-like and in moderate quantities. The name "Muna" comes from a jade mine in Myanmar called "Muna", which is famous for its abundant production of full-color materials with uniform color. Basically, it has obvious dot-shaped cotton, also known as snowflake cotton. However, not all snowflake cotton jade is produced from the Muna field, so not all snowflake cotton is Muna material.
