Is “plain” jade better or “carved” jade better? When buying jade, you should consider these two points, remember!

Everyone knows that the beauty of jade lies in its quality. Usually, high-quality jadeite mostly shows its gentle jadeite beauty in the form of "plain" body. "Su" is what experts call "plain jade". There are no carved patterns or decorations on the surface. The quality of jadeite is very high and it must not have any cracks or defects. "Carved jadeite" seems to be exquisite and translucent, but in fact, "there is no flower without a strand", and complex patterns are usually used to cover up cracks and other flaws.

The top-grade jade is basically "plain".

The processing of jade jewelry is divided into two categories: "plain" and "carved". Natural jade is jade jewelry that has no carved patterns or graphics on the surface. In a narrow sense, jade ring faces, bracelets and plain jewelry belong to the category of plain jade; in a broad sense, those carved Guanyin and Maitreya Buddha also belong to the category of natural jade, because this type of jade jewelry usually emphasizes symmetry, has high requirements on materials and has a smooth surface. Except for the fixed engraving lines, there will be no unnecessary engraving flowers.

Why is plain jade better than carved jade?

Because plain jade can best express the beauty of jade. Diamonds and gemstones are better than beauty of brilliance and fire. The beauty of jadeite lies in the quality of the jade, and the shape of the jewelry is also very special. Only jadeite without any flaws or cracks can be made into "plain" jewelry. There is a saying in the jargon that goes "no cracks, no flowers", and cracks refer to the small cracks on jade. In this jargon, only jade with flaws or cracks will be used to make carved jade. Many people like finely carved jade. This is to use the combined effects of light reflection and refraction to highlight the three-dimensional sense of jade. The thinned area is usually imperfect. Common leaf-shaped ornaments and intricate veining are often used to hide cracks or remove surface fissures.

Therefore, plain jade has more appreciation potential than carved jade, and the top-grade jade is basically “plain”. Be careful when choosing carved jadeite. Ordinary consumers may not be able to see the flaws and cracks covered by the carved jadeite. The engraver can use the line pressing method to carve cracks into very beautiful lines, or carve flaws into flowers, leaves, animals and other images. Jadeite also requires "seeing countless jades" before you can understand within what price range to buy the most cost-effective item. This is called buying within your means and purchasing highlights. The most taboo thing about jade is the pursuit of "perfection", perfect material, perfect carving, favorite subject matter, and excellent color. Only 2% of the super rich can afford these "imperial-level" jades. When carving, we must pay attention to "the picture must have meaning, and the meaning must be auspicious". These carved decorations are usually auspicious patterns just to cover up defects. If consumers come across a carving theme they like, don’t worry about it as long as they like it!
