Exquisite jade products need to be processed. A jade carving requires careful consideration before carving. Turning a piece of jade from a raw stone into a work of art requires multiple processes and consumes a lot of time and energy. Then do you know how jade is processed and what are the requirements?

1. Appearance

To determine what kind of object or jewelry a piece of jade is suitable for carving, you should carefully observe the appearance, color, jade quality, and cracks of the jade before carving, as well as the shape, size, and distribution of the jade color in the original stone's facets, and then conceive and design based on the size, color, texture, and grain of the jade material.

It is also necessary to check which part of the jade material has impurities so that they can be removed during production. The so-called "strengthening strengths and avoiding weaknesses" means applying skills according to the material, so that we can make the best use of it and make each finished jade product achieve the best effect.

There are many types of jade, and the colors are complex and varied. Even different parts of the same piece of jade have different types, water content, and colors. Jade carvers are required to design carving themes that are suitable for them in their minds. Jade appraisal is a very important part of jade carving creation.

2. Concept and design

Conception is the concrete embodiment of the designer's knowledge, pursuit, ideal, and ideas, and different blocks can trigger different conceptual ideas. Based on the accumulated materials, his own aesthetic taste, and the shape or color of the block, the designer will be inspired and enter the process of conceiving and designing.

Painting patterns on jade with a brush or showing them on a drawing is an important process of transforming the virtual into the real, and is the key to jade carving creation.

Jade carving is destructive, as jade raw materials can only be carved away to remove materials, but cannot be filled. Once the jade is sawed open, it cannot be re-carved. Therefore, the design must be done with great caution, and this process often takes a long time to finalize.

3. Color

The use of color is the core of sculpture design. The color that can be used on the block must be bright, prominent and attractive before the design can be based on this color. If the block has no color, you can use water skin color or fog color as the color.

Generally speaking, the use of color has universal significance and important role in jade carvings, but it is not so prominent in jewelry. Except for bracelets and pendants with two or more colors, the meaning of color is not important as long as the ring face stone or pendant is single color. The conception and design of jewelry should be divided into bracelets, small pendants, pendants and ring stones, and the materials selected should all be top-quality emerald green. The general choice is that the best one is to be polished into a ring face stone, the next best is to be made into a pendant, the next best is to be made into a bracelet, and the next best is to be made into a small flower pendant.

4. Rough carving

Through technical means such as chopping, chiseling, marking, buckling, scratching, punching, rolling and drilling, the jade material is gradually transformed into a three-dimensional sculpture. What kind of subject matter should be used to express what kind of theme, and a just right depiction should be made on the block. The well-thought-out draft should be roughly expressed in the block, and its layout should be checked to see if it is reasonable and the material selection is appropriate, and then it should be revised repeatedly.

For example, when designing a character, you don't need to draw the details such as his eyes, mouth, nose, and hair first. You only need to draw the outline of the character's shape. The basic postures of the head, feet and body, and the general and particular proportions and movements are examined from different angles. Special symbols or reserved symbols are marked on the parts that need to be convex or concave. After the basic image is determined, it is handed over to technicians for rough cutting and grinding.

5. Fine carving

Fine modifications are made to the roughly carved jade pieces to make the jade carvings more vivid and lifelike. Specifically, the details that best show the charm of jade are realistically portrayed. This is not something that anyone can do. Only artists with ingenious ideas and superb skills can combine their inner meaning and conception with the meaning and conception of the jade material itself based on their long-term artistic practice, and thus carve out artistic treasures.

On the block that has already taken shape, some small changes can be made as appropriate to depict the specific parts in detail and realistically. The fine carving must ensure that the composition is complex but not messy, and the layers are clear. There should be a strong contrast between light and dark in the characters and scenery, and they should be arranged in an orderly manner, with sparse and dense areas alternating to set off each other.

6. Polishing

Polishing is the process of grinding the surface of jade to make it smooth, bright and beautiful. It may seem ordinary but it is crucial. Polishing requires seven steps: "oil stone, green silk, iron nails, sandpaper, brush, cleaning, and waxing". Jade has diverse colors, rich layers, and strong light transmittance. Any mistake in polishing will destroy the overall color and light perception and affect the visual effect. Therefore, jade has extremely high requirements for polishing technology.

Superior polishing technology can make jade appear delicate and transparent in texture and moist in luster, making it sparkle. On the contrary, it may destroy the beauty of jade, distort the author's true inner interpretation of the work, lead to failure, and affect the market value of jade.

7. Fine decoration

Decoration and packaging are the final steps in jade carving. Among them, the most important decoration for jade ornaments is the base. There are many materials and styles for the ornaments' bases, and a good match can enhance the artistic value. After the decoration is completed, the next step is packaging. A beautiful jade product must have good packaging, including inner packaging, outer packaging, and supporting packaging. This can not only improve the grade, but also have the functions of protection and transportation. Jade carving is exquisite in its creation, with the shape being chosen according to the situation, the color being used according to the technique, and the construction being carried out with ingenuity, so as to "take the natural shape and obtain the natural spirit."

Chinese people pay attention to the double meanings of jade. Therefore, jade carvers must skillfully integrate flowers, birds, fish and insects into a certain pattern according to the material of the jade, or give it auspiciousness, or express good wishes such as peace, longevity, and happiness, or imply a warning or self-encouragement.

The themes of carvings on ancient jade products are often traditional Chinese auspicious patterns, such as what is said in "Annotations and Commentaries": "Auspicious means things that are blessed and good; auspicious means signs of good fortune and prosperity." As the saying goes: "When a person has five blessings, flowers bloom in spring." The Five Blessings are the embodiment of auspiciousness. Happiness, wealth, longevity, joy and fortune are known as the "Five Blessings" among the people; the God of Fortune, the God of Wealth, the God of Longevity, the God of Joy and the God of Wealth are revered as the "Five Gods of Fortune" in the fairy world. The patterns used in jade carving mainly include welcoming good fortune, happiness, longevity and good fortune, longevity of cranes, double happiness and attracting wealth and treasure. In addition, totem worship is also a common feature of all ethnic cultures.

The carving process is complicated and requires not only superb carving skills, but also emotional investment and vitality to make the work full of vitality.
