Experts explain how to distinguish between A-grade jadeite and dyed jadeite

In the jade industry, jade is definitely a major counterfeiter.

As the most popular jade in the market, there are many ways to counterfeit jadeite. The methods of counterfeiting jade include dyeing, glue injection, bleaching, coating, synthesis, etc.

Reasons for the appearance of dyed jadeite:

Dyed jade is what we often call C-grade jade. Regardless of whether it is bleached or injected with glue or not, as long as it is dyed by artificial methods, it is called C-grade jade.

Dyed jade is colorless or light-colored jade that is dyed into a better-looking color, usually green. This method is used to imitate high-quality jade.

In order to gain more profits, some unscrupulous businessmen like to sell dyed jade as pure natural high-quality jade. Dyed jade contains chemical substances. Wearing it for a long time is not only unhealthy but also harmful to our health.

So how is jade dyed?

There are many ways to dye jade. There are also a wide variety of dyes available for selection. For example, the purple and green polishing powders commonly seen on the market can be used directly as dyes to dye the surface of jade.

The most common dyed jade on the market is dyed emerald green, which makes the color brighter and imitates high-quality jade.

However, in recent years, new dyeing techniques have emerged for jadeite, including dyeing it green and some other colors.

This kind of dyed jade is mainly used to imitate oily green or blue water jade, etc. Moreover, the value of the oily green and blue water jade itself is not high, and people often tend to overlook the counterfeiting of this kind of jade, and merchants can also make considerable profits from it.

The method of partially dyeing jade is also popular nowadays. Different from the overall dyeing in the past, the partial dyeing of jade is a process in which the color of jade appears in the form of dots, making others mistakenly think that it is high-quality jade such as floating blue flower jade.

Characteristics of dyed jadeite:

Dyed jade has accumulated dye in the cracks on its surface. Can be observed with a magnifying glass. Secondly, the color of dyed jade only exists on the surface layer, which looks "floating" and the color is too uniform.

The color of natural jade is embedded inside, and the color is unevenly distributed, with beautiful layers and obvious boundaries; some dyed jade has an unnatural bluish color, and the appearance is dark, dull and bluish, which is what people often call evil color.

How to identify dyed jadeite?

1. Observation with naked eyes

To identify whether it is dyed jade, you can first observe it with the naked eye. Natural jade generally has a good gloss, is full of water, and has rich color, which looks very pleasing to the eye. The color of dyed jade is too exaggerated and looks dull. The surface is relatively dry and there will be some pigmentation in some parts. For those jade lovers who have certain professional knowledge of jade, they can simply judge it with their naked eyes.

2. Listen to the sound recognition

Listening to the knocking sound can also help you initially identify whether jade is real or fake. The sound of natural jade when knocked is relatively clear, but the sound of dyed jade when knocked is dull because its internal structure is destroyed due to high-temperature treatment. However, as counterfeiting technology becomes more and more advanced, the knocking sound cannot necessarily be accurately judged, and whether it is real or fake requires consideration from many aspects.

3. Soak in boiling water

Soaking jade in boiling water is also a way to determine whether jade is real or fake. Soak the dyed jade in boiling water at 80 to 100 degrees. If you go there after a few hours, you will find that the water will slowly turn green. However, jade lovers should pay attention that not all dyed jade can be identified in this way. This method is only applicable to jadeite that is colored with inorganic materials and green polishing powder, and is not suitable for identifying high-tech dyed jadeite.

4.Ultraviolet fluorescent light

Ultraviolet light can be said to be a good helper in identifying the authenticity of jadeite. Put jade under ultraviolet light, natural jade will have no fluorescent reaction; if it is dyed jade, it will show fluorescent reaction. This method is particularly effective for jadeite that is dyed purple. The purple dyed jadeite has a strong fluorescent reaction under ultraviolet light.

5. Identification by professional institutions

If you feel that your naked eyes are not accurate enough, some simple identification methods are not enough to help you judge the authenticity of the jade, whether the jade is dyed, injected with glue, etc. It is recommended that jade lovers go to professional testing agencies to use machines or some chemical reagents to help you identify the authenticity of jade. The certificate is the most direct way to see whether the jade has been dyed.
