The type, water and color of jade are all important

Regardless of whether it is jadeite, rough material or finished product, there are some basic elements to judge the quality of jadeite. These basic things run through the entire life of jadeite. They are the simplest and most difficult things to grasp, and are also the reason why jadeite is more complicated than other gemstones.

First of all, "seed head" is the first element of jade, because it is the foundation of jade. Species is a comprehensive concept, which depends on the size of the crystals, the density of the crystals, and the neatness of the crystal arrangement, which is what we usually call old or young species. The external manifestation of the quality of the jade is the gloss (oiliness), strength of the steel taste (fine and firm texture), strength of fluorescence, etc. of the finished product after the jade is polished. For gambling stones (semi-gambling, clear materials), it is more of an estimate based on the gambler's experience in handling the goods before polishing, which requires a lot of experience in processing and polishing from rough materials to finished products.

Secondly, it is the "ground" of jade. Some people define "ground" as the part of jade other than the jade color. This understanding will cause problems when explaining some phenomena. Personally, I think the "ground" of jade should be extended more broadly to the entire jade individual, including the colored part, but the color grows on the ground. The elements of "ground" include the amount of impurities, grayscale, transparency, uniformity, etc. Impurities include cotton, wool, black and so on; high grayscale will cause the colorless parts of the jade to turn gray, and the colored parts to turn dark, making the jade lack clarity and brightness, and the beauty will be reduced to varying degrees; transparency is actually related to the species and the amount of impurities. For example, fine and tight flesh will increase the transparency of jade, while cotton wool will affect the transparency of jade. For a special form, glutinous material, it can be understood as fine and tight flesh but with cotton-like substances, but it is extremely uniform, and the finished product has a special taste; the uniformity of the jade flesh is also an important factor in the "ground" of jade. If the crystals are large or small, tight or dense, it will have a great impact on the transparency of the ground and the color distribution pattern.

Next, it is the "water head" of jadeite, which refers to the depth that the naked eye can distinguish when light (natural light) enters jadeite. Factors that affect water head include species, location, and color. Under the same quality, jadeite with good quality, clean ground and colorless has the longest water head. Two more extreme examples are what we commonly call white glass jade and black jade. The white glass has the longest water head, while the black jade has the shortest.

The last factor is the color of jade, which can be divided into green, purple, red, yellow, blue, black, white, colorless, etc. However, due to the red, yellow and blue color factors, color cast will occur. For example, green that is yellowish represents yellow sun green, green that is bluish represents emerald green, and no color cast is true green; purple that is reddish represents toon purple, purple that is bluish represents eggplant purple, and no color cast is true purple.

The above are some basic factors for determining the quality of jadeite, but we need to have a concept that no matter the type, land, water, or color, it is not a discrete concept. Jadeite is a natural gem, and the internal and external environment in the process of generating jadeite is a continuous form existing in nature. In theory, each factor has countless grade classifications. For example, the so-called ice type (the boundary between glass type and ice type is relatively vague, and the best ice type can be considered as glass type) and glutinous type are too general after all. These two categories can be more finely divided into infinite categories through the elements of type, land, and water. The granularity of the division depends on the player's quality sensitivity and market recognition. This is also one of the reasons why the quality of jade is complex.
