1. Look at the color

No matter what you buy, at least 90% of it will be related to color. Whether it is clothes, shoes, bags, furniture decorations, etc., sometimes you may even have to choose the color when buying a piece of chewing gum.

Jadeite comes in a whole range of colors. There are red, yellow, green, purple, white, black and blue colors, among which green is the most valuable. There is a saying in jade that "a one-level difference in color means a ten-fold difference in price". The first thing is to evaluate the color: mainly look at whether it is positive, bright, rich and uniform. Take the following two jade rings as examples.

If we look at these two rings, they are almost the same in size, and the setting, type, water quality, etc. are also almost the same. So the difference in their prices is reflected in the color.

The color on the top is lighter and not as saturated and rich overall; while the green on the bottom is very full and has a strong visual feel. So the upper one is close to 10,000 yuan, while the lower one is over 20,000 yuan, the price difference is as much as twice.

2. See the species

The layman looks at the color, the expert looks at the type.

Among the factors that affect its price, the type of jade is actually the most important. Jadeite of good quality has fine crystal grains and a tight structure, which makes it easier to show the jade's beauty.

Looking at these two pendants, the colors are almost the same, reaching bright green, and the water head is basically the same. But the price of one is around RMB 50, while the other costs several thousand yuan.

The top one: the seeds are finer and the granularity is invisible to the naked eye; and the bottom one: this one is slightly worse, especially the top one is obviously a little coarser, so the price is less than five yuan, but the overall color is still icy and bright green, and can reach several thousand yuan.

Since the quality is more important than the color, what is the price range of a colorless jade (the two pictures below are the same type)?

Let’s take a look at these three lucky melons. They are glass-type, which are rare in the market and are considered the highest grade in the species classification (let’s not talk about the dragon stone type for now). They are completely transparent and bright, icy and hard, and spotless. They are simply textbook-level specimens. The market price is over 40,000 yuan, so good quality jade is particularly attractive. That charm really seems to come from the bones.

3. Look at the water

Water head refers to the transparency of jadeite, I believe everyone knows it. Generally speaking, the water content of jade is closely related to its type. Jade with fine type will have high transparency, that is, good water content, but this is not absolute, as will be discussed later.

Looking at these two jade Buddhas, although the carvings are similar, the water heads are very different.

Above: It has color, neat carving, glutinous texture, and is relatively thick, so although its transparency is average, it is colored and costs several thousand yuan. Below: High ice type, very rich in water, almost completely transparent, full of water, and very icy. Although it has no color, it is fine-grained, watery, plump and rich, and also reaches the price of small five.

4. Look at the thickness (shape)

Shape does not just refer to shape, it also includes size. Shape refers to whether the shape of a piece of jade jewelry is correct, regular and complete. What should be straight cannot be crooked, and what should be round cannot be flat. It’s like when you buy a loaf of bread, the bigger one will be more expensive, and the smaller one will be cheaper. This principle also applies to the jade market. The prices of thick and plump jade will definitely go up.

Looking at this ring and this jade Buddha again, we should not only look at the color, type, and tone, but also the shape.

Ring: In addition to factors such as type, water, color, and setting, the shape should also be considered. Whether it is a perfect circle, oval or marquise, the egg surface must be polished neatly and perfectly. Another example is a jade Buddha: of the same quality and color, a thick, full and round face, fat ears and protruding belly will definitely be more than twice as expensive as a flat and thin one.

For carvings, especially jade Buddha, Guanyin, etc., the shape (carving) is very important. A good piece of material will be worthless if the face is carved crookedly, and it will be difficult to sell for less than five cents even if the color is good.
