Toughness refers to the ability of an object to resist impact, tearing and breaking. The stronger the object's resistance to impact, tearing and breaking, the more resilient it is. In contrast to toughness, brittleness means being easily broken by impact. Toughness is related to the crystal structure and texture of minerals. Generally, single crystal gemstones have low toughness and high brittleness, while jade has high toughness and low brittleness. Black diamonds that are microcrystalline aggregates have the greatest toughness because the bonds between black diamond microcrystals are the strongest. Among jades, jade with a fibrous interwoven structure is tougher than jade with a granular structure or a fibrous granular structure. Jade with a felt structure is tougher than jade with a fiber interwoven structure. For example, the structure of Hetian jade is a felt-like structure, while the structure of jadeite is mostly a fibrous granular structure, so the toughness of jadeite is smaller than that of Hetian jade. The structures of Dushan jade and quartzite jade are mostly granular and very brittle. The finished products are easily broken, so their prices are not as high as jadeite and Hetian jade. The toughness of a material is also related to its cleavage. Generally, objects with well-developed cleavage are also more brittle. Diamond is the hardest object in the world, but diamond has perfect cleavage and is a brittle gem, so it is not suitable for collision, and may crack or break after collision. Jade is durable, as reflected in its strong toughness and its resistance to damage by hammer blows, a characteristic that even diamonds cannot match. In 1935, a major earthquake struck Southern California, and a small craft shop in Santa Barbara had its collection of Chinese artifacts fall to the ground. But what made the shop owner happy was that although the most valuable jade products were placed on the top shelf, none of them were damaged. It was obvious that jade was very tough. Toughness is related to the bonding ability of the jade's internal substances. Jade with high toughness is not easy to break and is wear-resistant, making it suitable for processing. Among all jade varieties, nephrite has the best toughness, and Hetian jade is the king of nephrite. If the toughness of Hetian jade is 100, then the toughness of jadeite is relatively 50, and the toughness of Xiuyan jade is only 25. Although jade has strong toughness, don't misunderstand this characteristic as being resistant to falling. Little do people know that jade also needs careful maintenance. When wearing jade jewelry, you should try to avoid dropping it from a height or hitting it against hard objects, especially jade jewelry with small cracks, otherwise it will easily break or be damaged.
