Jade polishing is like a woman's makeup, seven steps are not enough

Polishing is an important step in the production of jadeite, which can make the surface of jadeite more shiny and bright.

First step: oil stone

Use a small oil stone to polish it first. If the previous carving was rough, use oil stones of different coarseness and fineness to polish it first.

Second course: Green silk

It is to grind the surface with a grinding wheel and grind it repeatedly. In the first and second processes, dye is often applied first, which cannot be washed off with water. In this way, you can know which parts have been polished and which have not been polished. Polishing powder is also necessary.

The third step: iron nails

Use an iron nail dipped in diamond powder to finish the details of the carving. Also called drilling and grinding, various grinding heads can be replaced according to the needs of the carving.

Step 4: Sandpaper

Use sandpaper of different coarseness and fineness to polish the large areas of the carving in turn, preparing for the next step.

Step 5: Apply the brush

Use a brush dipped in diamond powder to whip the surface of the sculpture at high speed. This step is basically 80% completed, so this step is also critical and requires patience.

Step 6: Cleansing

The purpose is to clean the remaining polishing powder and stains. Ultrasonic machines are mainly used for cleaning, and alcohol is used to wipe areas that cannot be cleaned. For many finely carved products, small bumps need to be removed bit by bit, and toothpicks are often used.

Step 7: Waxing

Waxing is a way to protect the surface of finished jade products. It is completely different from the glue injection and pickling of B goods. At the same time, in order to protect some carved details, such as the faces and fingers of figures, the faces and claws of auspicious beasts in decorative pieces, so that they are not blurred during the polishing process, sometimes a brown solidified colloid is first tested on an alcohol lamp, burned and then dripped on the fine parts of the jade carvings. Otherwise, it would be a disaster if they were accidentally polished away.

After going through seven processes, the appearance of jadeite is very different from that of raw jadeite, but this is not the end. In order to make the jadeite more beautiful, it needs to go through these...

Pass sour plums and ash water

After grinding and polishing, there will be many flaws on the surface of jade. At this time, it is necessary to use acid pickling to remove the residual dirt on the surface of the jade. This process is called "sour plum". Note: The acid pickling here is different from the acid pickling of B-grade jadeite. "Pickling with acid plum" means putting A-grade jadeite in a prepared acid solution for pickling to wash away residual dirt without causing damage to the jadeite.

After the jade has been "passed through the sour plum treatment", the stains on its surface must also be rinsed clean. The water used to rinse the jade appears gray, and we call this process "passing through gray water".

Wax stewing and wax spraying

Wax stewing is an essential process in jade processing. This process is to make the jade look smoother and more moisturized. Generally, small jade ornaments are stewed in wax, while for large ornaments, the jade is slightly heated, white Sichuan wax powder is sprayed on it, and then wiped with a cloth. All jade surfaces have wax. This does not harm jade. It not only makes jade more beautiful, but also prevents dirt from penetrating into jade.

Remove wax

Some people may wonder: After all the effort to stew and spray wax on the jade, why do we need to clean the wax? This is because the wax on the surface of the jade will not be completely smooth and flat after stewing wax and spraying wax. At this time, the excess wax needs to be cleaned to ensure the beauty of the jade!

After going through the above-mentioned processes, a finished jade product is produced. It has lost its gray appearance as a rough product and presents a bright, beautiful, warm and soft lustre after being carefully carved.
