How to choose a jade ring face

Among jade products, plain products are more common, generally there are two types: ring faces and bracelets. Plain jade products have very high requirements for jade raw materials. Here are some common sense in buying jade egg-shaped faces and bracelets.

A: Contour: The contours of jade ring faces include egg (oval), pear, marquise, saddle, heart, crescent, rectangle, etc., with egg shape being the most common; the contours of jade bracelets include round rod and flat round rod, among which round rod bracelets are divided into thick rod and thin rod; the rod diameter of thick rod bracelets is generally greater than 10mml, and the rod diameter of thin rod bracelets is generally 10mm or less, and most of them are domestic craftsmanship.

B: Symmetry: Jadeite is particular about its full shape and neat workmanship. For jadeite ring faces, whether it is egg-shaped, marquise-shaped or other shapes, it is required to have good symmetry. If the bottom surface is uneven or asymmetrical on the left and right, it will reduce its value. For jade bracelets, symmetry is reflected in the uniformity of the diameter of the stem. Similarly, jade bead necklaces that are uniform in size and well-rounded will also be hard to put down. At Christie's autumn auction in 1996, a jadeite glass necklace made of 79 jadeite beads was sold for HK$17.62 million, becoming the second most expensive jadeite jewelry in the world's auction history.

C: Length-to-width ratio: The appropriate length-to-width ratio creates the beauty of jadeite's appearance. For example, the length, width and thickness of a plain egg-shaped ring are 20mm*13mm*15mm respectively. If the ring face is biconvex, then it can be said to be of appropriate size proportion, or "of good quality." The width, thickness and inner diameter of the jade bracelet should also be coordinated to show its perfection. At the Sotheby's autumn auction in J996, a crystal clear, emerald green flat round rod bracelet was 15mm wide, 7.4mm thick and 56mm in inner diameter. The transaction price was nearly 10 million Hong Kong dollars. Comments point out: "Only jadeite of outstanding quality can be cut into a bracelet that is unparalleled in width and color. This bracelet is truly a very precious and dazzling treasure."

D: Thickness and curvature: For plain egg-shaped jadeite ring faces, the thickness and curvature of the top surface are more important than its outline, because a ring face with a certain thickness and curvature has a better optical effect than a relatively flat and thin ring face. Sometimes, in order to make jade more transparent, the ring face is processed by digging out the bottom, but at the same time it also affects the value of the jade itself due to the reduction in thickness. Generally speaking, ring faces with two convex sides are better, while those with flat bottoms are inferior. The more the bottom is dug and the thinner the ring surface is, the lower the value.
