Why is this tiny jade egg-shaped object so expensive?

Among the many finished products of jade, egg-shaped jade is a very popular one. The commonly mentioned egg-shaped jadeite includes rings, pendants, earrings, etc. A small jade egg-shaped jadeite is crystal clear and glittering, which makes people love it.

People who are new to the industry may have an illusion: jade egg-shaped faces are small in size and should be easy to make compared to bracelets, which require extremely high material requirements. Any piece of material can be used, so the price should be relatively cheap.

But the fact is, a small jade egg-shaped inlaid product with excellent quality, water and color has a price in the five or six figures. Isn’t it jaw-dropping? What makes jade egg-shaped beads so expensive?

1. Difficulty in obtaining materials

Generally speaking, jadeite raw stones are first considered for making into bracelets, and then other things. Only when there is no other choice will they be considered for making into egg-shaped stones.

The material used for egg-shaped jade must be of the best quality, usually colorless or full-colored, and the water quality must reach a certain level. From a piece of raw stone, only a small cabochon will be produced, and the rest will become waste. Naturally, the jade cabochon will become expensive!

2. Superior quality

In order to obtain egg-shaped materials, in addition to requiring high-quality water quality and color, it is also required that there should be no defects such as cracks, white cotton, black spots, etc. This is simply to the extent of being "nitpicking" for a piece of jade.

3. Exquisite craftsmanship

In terms of craftsmanship, the outline of the egg-shaped surface must be smooth and graceful, symmetrical up and down and left and right, and the length and width must also be in a certain proportion. The golden ratio of length and width is 1:0.618.

The egg-shaped surface can be divided into three types: double convex, flat bottom and hollow bottom. The egg shape of the double convex egg-shaped surface is the fullest, followed by the flat bottom. The hollow bottom is used for materials with poor water quality and poor transparency.

The double convex egg surface requires that both the front and back sides are bulging, so that the color on the back can be more reflected to the front side, thus gathering the colors.

So how should we choose egg noodles?

1. Color

The prerequisite for jade egg-shaped surfaces is pure color. That is to say, you should try to pick jade raw materials with a single and pure color. The most taboo thing is color spots. Different shades of color will affect the value of the egg-shaped surfaces.

2. Watering

When selecting materials for egg-shaped jade, both water quality and color are very important. You must choose the most essential part of the original stone, requiring the best water head and finest quality, so that it will be more transparent and have a better texture after polishing.

3. Defects

Problems such as cracks, white cotton, and black spots are normal on flower pieces, bracelets, and necklaces, but they are considered defects on egg-shaped surfaces, so special attention should be paid when selecting.

4. Size

In the case of the same species, try to choose the larger ones according to your ability. Scarcity makes things valuable. The larger the egg surface and the better the quality, the greater the potential for appreciation in value in the future.

5. Cutting and grinding

Although the egg-shaped surface is simple in shape, it must also have perfect cutting proportions and a curvature of appropriate thickness. Generally speaking, double convex > flat bottom > hollow bottom. The thinner the egg-shaped surface, the lower the value.

From material collection to finished product, jade egg-shaped faces have to go through meticulous selection and complicated polishing, which embodies the hard work of many people. It is natural that such a small egg-shaped face that pursues ultimate perfection is expensive!
