What does it mean for jade to "fluoresce"? What conditions must be met for jade to fluoresce?

When you come into contact with jadeite, you will often hear the professional term "fluorescence". This fluorescence is not fluorescence under ultraviolet light, but an optical phenomenon.

What is the “fluorescence” of jadeite? "Fluorescence" means "the appearance of luster", which is an optical phenomenon. It means that when jade is exposed to sunlight, due to the optical effect, light converges inside the jade to form a bright and dazzling halo, which is reflected onto our eyeballs. We call this phenomenon the "fluorescence" phenomenon.

This phenomenon often occurs in jadeite with good quality and curved surfaces (glass type, ice type). Under normal light, a bright spot can be observed on the curved surface of the jadeite. When the jadeite is rotated, it will be found that the position of the light spot will also change. Not all jade has a "fluorescence" reaction. "Fluorescence" is mainly a performance of fine-grade jade. Two conditions must be met for jade to produce "fluorescence".

First, the quality must be guaranteed, the water quality must be good, the jade must be fine and dense, the transparency must be high, and there must be a certain degree of translucency so that light can shine in and be reflected out.

Second, jade carving should have a curvature. A certain curvature can increase the reflection surface of light. Generally speaking, the more reflective surfaces there are, the higher the reflectivity, thereby increasing the intensity of the "fluorescence". On the contrary, jadeite that has no curvature and is overall flat has a very weak fluorescein effect. Of course, if the quality of the jade itself is poor, then even if the cut is good, the “fluorescence” will not be satisfactory.

In summary, fluorescence is an explanation of the optical phenomenon of light scattering in jade. There are very strict requirements on the transparency and refractive index of jade itself. On the other hand, the fluorescence phenomenon is not an exclusive optical phenomenon of jadeite. If the transparency and refractive index of the jade meet the requirements of fluorescence and the processing technique is appropriate, the fluorescence phenomenon can be presented.
