Natural jade generally has a glassy luster, sub-glassy luster or semi-glassy luster. Jade that has been artificially treated generally has a waxy luster, while some jades, such as Hetian jade and Xiuyan jade, have an oily luster.

In terms of defects, first observe whether the jade has tiny cracks, and secondly observe the color roots inside the jade. A-grade jade has color roots inside, while dyed jade does not.
