Do you know how jade is polished?

Do you know how jade is polished?

From its mining to its final product, jade has to go through countless twists and turns, countless thrilling moments, and countless ups and downs to create one world-class masterpiece after another! Today I will introduce to you the final step from stone to finished jewelry - polishing. Even if you win in the previous stages, you may fail or even succeed in this stage.

For a jade carving, whether it is a plain piece, a carved piece, a semi-finished product or a work of art, how high is the starting price and what kind of final effect can be achieved? The key is polishing!

A good work reflects the ingenuity of the jade carver. However, every profession has its own specialties. Whether the work can be faithful to the jade carver's creative intent, detailed expression, and final light effect are far beyond the carver's control.

The polishing process is complicated and lengthy, and each step, including oiling stone, green silk, nailing, sandpaper, brushing, cleaning, and waxing, needs to be carefully considered...

The first step: Apply a layer of paste polishing powder on the surface of the carved jade. The green one is chromium oxide and the orange-red one is cerium oxide.

Step 2: Grind the surface with a 2000-grit grinding wheel.

Step 3: Repeat the first two steps, usually twice.

Step 4: Use a brush to apply diamond powder on the surface of the jade and then polish it with a hard-bristle brush.

Step 5: Fine work, start grinding small places that cannot be reached with large tools. Use bamboo, dip it in diamond powder, use bamboo chopsticks for larger areas, and bamboo toothpicks for smaller areas.

Step 6: Fine polishing. Coat the jade with diamond powder and then use hard leather to polish it. Cowhide is mostly used in China, while elephant leather is mostly used in Myanmar.

The jade has been polished to a high finish, but there are still some finishing touches to be done.

Step 7: Cleaning: clean the remaining polishing powder on the polished jade. It is mainly cleaned with an ultrasonic machine, and if the area cannot be cleaned, use alcohol to wipe it.

Step 8: Waxing is a way to protect the surface of the finished jade product.

Melt the wax into a pot mixed with water and vinegar. The ratio of water to wax is an industry secret!

After the wax melts, pour in the jade. The heat should not be too high, simmer slowly. Needs someone to watch over it. Cook for about 15 minutes, then remove from the water, wipe clean and blow dry. A piece of exquisite jade is now presented to everyone.

If any step is not done properly during the process, the final effect of the jade will be poor. It is really a matter of one's own success or failure, so the final operation of a professional polisher is very important. It is the key point that determines the success or failure of this jade.

For valuable jade jewelry, how to add the finishing touch is absolutely inseparable from the silent hard work of the polisher. An excellent polisher is dedicated, focused, persistent and careful. They silently interpret the connotation of craftsmanship.

Finally, take a look at the comparison pictures of jade before and after polishing as well as some pictures of the finished products, and feel the unique charm of polishing!
